Ring King worth Restoring? Pic Added Please Help me ID This CAB

Hey guys. i just went to an auctin and snagged this Ring King for $30.00.

And it Works! Needs some coin mechs wired etc and some cleaning but pretty solid. But i cant find any threads where people have fully restored them/convert them into something better etc.

Any ideas?

Hey guys. i just went to an auctin and snagged (i believe) dedicated Ring King for $30.00.

This one i got has the wood vinyl looking stuff on the side of it like the first pic on the klov.com website.

Any ideas?
If the cab is woodgrain, it's not dedicated. There really isn't a true dedicated Ring King cabinet, Data East used the same cabinet for a lot of their games and just swapped out the side art, bezel, CP, and marquee. IIRC they called it the Data East convertible upright. The second picture on the KLOV entry shows that model with Ring King installed.

If you post pics of the cabinet, someone here can ID it for you.

oh ok cool. Yea ill post pics of it soon its still in the back of the van lol.

Couldnt beat it for 30 bucks though and it works. :)

While the wood grain is definitely not dedicated, I wouldn't say there is no dedicated version. There was a factory version that was a full cab with art. Just because they made it easy to swap in other data east kits in the future doesn't mean that one that came from the factory wasn't dedicated. If you go with that logic then there is not a dedicated paper boy or champ sprint. Or road runner, TOD, peter pack rat, road blasters or marble madness. While all these games may have been available in a kit I'm pretty sure you could also buy them as a complete game from the factory or a distributor. If you use that same logic then pepper II, venture and hard hat might not be dedicated games either as all were interchangeable with the same type of swap that is described for ring king. And all were also available in kit form.

Hey guys ok posted a pic of it.

Can anyone help me on what kind of cab this is and what should i do with it? I thought Ring King was actually pretty fun playing it, but would love to bring it back to what it used to be. I got it working nice now too and i did clean it all up. I drilled out the coin door and found a little data east adaptor thing. Ill get the number off of it and post it to see what adaptor it is and what i could do with it.

It has a 19" G07 Monitor in it bolted in vertically. Which looks really nice but the words on one side of it are just a little bit small than the other side. Im hoping after a new cap kit that will fix her up.

BTW should i replace the flyback if im doing a cap kit? The caps look relatively newer in it so im wondering if i would have to invest in a flyback.

Personally i dont like the woodgrain though and would be cool to strip it and paint it, but i dont wanna do that if its something worth keeping in the woodgrain.

centuri? hmmmmmm to be honest there's a really tiny little planet screen burned in the picture on the right side. but thats about all the screen burn i see. looks like a planet with a ring around it.

This monitor could have been swapped too but figured id throw that out there.

woah im thinking pleiades, looks like that little planet in my picture!

is either of those games worth restoring it back too?

That depends on your meaning of "worth"

Worth as in: Will I be able to sell this for a profit = No

Worth as in: Will I be able to sell this and break even = No

Worth as in: Are these good games that I would enjoy playing = Yes (IMO)

Worth as in: Would I enjoy and get a great feeling of accomplishment from bringing a classic game back from the dead = Yes

hmmm i see. cool, i still have no idea on how to know exactly what game was in the cab though do i? can you tell by cab numbers on the back or anything?

I don't think so, unless you can find a tag stapled to the inside or something. I have what I thought was an original Time Pilot only to find a piece of paper stapled inside stamped "Centuri Round Up". If you have that burn, it's a pretty safe bet it was a Pleiades.

Do you mind saying where the auction was??? That game looks SO familiar...like it was in my garage for a very short time a few years ago. The wires hanging out the coin return seem familiar as does the rough front edges.

These are not really worth anything to most people. There are some people that love it and would pay a couple hundred for it, but only a handfull (IMO). I just sold this one a few weeks ago to someone who really wanted one. http://www.flickr.com/photos/djdns/page5/
It was a Karate Champ and I stripped it down, fixed the cab and turned it into a Ring King. It was worth it for me to do this for him, but I would've never done it otherwise. If you want to turn yours into a Karate Champ I have the wiring & bezel for it. I had the board also, but just sold it.

I'd try out Pleiades (sp) and see if you liked it. Then I'd start seeking out parts and see how hard it is to find them. I myself like that game.

AFA Ring King goes, I've attached a picture of the last machine I played. That control panel was metal and the buttons all had a great "click" action to them. You felt like you could really give them a pounding - which you need to when playing Ring King.

This might've been a conversion, but it sure had a "dedicated" feel to it. Take a look...
