Revolution X: What's the difference between Proto 5 and Rev.1 chipsets?

My old boardset has Rev. 1 Roms in it but due to non-working sound and some questionable legs on the sound roms, I picked up another Revolution X boardset. This boardset has a Proto 5 romset on all boards and is a verfied working boardset.

I was wondering, is it worth it to try to rechip it with the Rev. 1 roms? I know it should be a direct swap and the same boards will work. Does anyone know the differences between the chipsets (gameplay, sounds, etc?). Also, if you know anything different about the Rev. 2 chipset then chime in.

Thanks for any info you might have.

A whole lot of bug fixes and there's probably some things missing in those earlier roms as the game was still in development when they burned those proto sets.

Did the proto sets go out in mass? It seems like several threads of people having the proto sets. I can't see how they would sell a $3000 to $4000 game that hasn't been fully debugged yet.

Midway did it all the time. Let the ops start making money and they would send them the updates when ready. The most noticeable to me were NBA JAM TE (MK characters in version 1.0 and 2.0 removed at the request of the NBA) and MK2. The first revision my local arcade had was 2.0 (i think). There was no blood at all and very few special moves.

that's a step in the right direction :p

my grandparents usually held out until a game was updated or even fully updated before jumping on them. the only game I can think of that they bought essentially brand spanking new was SF2 CE. all their Williams/Midway games were out for a little bit. MK1, for instance, they didn't get that until it was a kit and was even the 5.0 T-unit. MK2 they also waited until it was a kit, at version 3.1.

when we got our NARC, it didn't even work. that was a really long time ago, but I seem to remember some dude I never saw before working on it to make it work.

I miss those days when we got actual NEW games. at least today I can get them all and don't have to drop 3-4 grand to get them lol

LOL!!! When MK4 originally shipped, it was an empty cabinet with no boards! Those were shipped out a month later when the first rev of the software was deemed ready to be released.

True story: When MK4 was set to go to a location for test, the cabinet was delivered to the arcade a few days before the game was ready. The boardless, non-working cabinet made $5 in coins before the game was ever turned on!

MXV, it would be REALLY awesome if you could make a thread with stories and anecdotes about your days working at Midway! I'm a huge fan of that company and I would love to hear stories from that Era!

Bumping this old thread. I have Proto 5.0 and am wondering what it will take to upgrade? Do all the roms on both boards need to be replaced? Where can I find them?
