I have 3 Rev X sound boards....and not a single one is working. One of them was...but it was giving me "Sound revision not high enough" error. I know what thats all about.

I got a board from work and threw it in the cab to see what revision it was and it said "sound revision failure". Everytime I go into diagnostics tests and test the sound board it says sound board not responding, and when I put my board back in I get the same thing now on mine.

Every now and then on my board the sound diagnostic will come back with "U2 rom failure", However when I swap that rom with another board it says the same. I'm getting all the +12, +5, and -5 vdc and tried a different ribbon cable even...but I'm lost now and getting frustrated.

So I've decided to test the components on the boards...capacitors, resistors, so on. I will be ordering a Willems USB IC programmer here soon to redo the roms in case they're bad.

So how exactly do I test the caps on this board with a multimeter? They're Axial caps...I know that much. Do I use the continuity between both leads of the cap or ohms between one cap lead and one resistor lead? And how to do you test the IC's? To make sure they're getting the right voltage?

Also is it possible a power surge in the wiring somewhere could be screwing something up? I mean three boards all having the same problem, especially when I know for a fact one of them was working. Thanks.

I'd start by looking at your main board, actually. If three boards all give the same problem, then perhaps there's something wrong with the main board? Check solder connections at the ribbon cable header, and see what drives that data bus. Chances are there's an ls244 or similar bus driver there. Also look for any of those resistor packs - they were crappy as all hell on Galaga, and I'd hope that Midway would have gotten their act together by 1994, but hey, you never know.

Now, I've never worked on a Revolution X before, so I *don't* know what's in there. But I'd still suggest taking a close look at the main board.

Dear god I hope it's nothing serious on the main PCB...i was lucky to actually get this Rev X with a working in it...last one I had I pitched it cos I couldn't find the main board after two years.

The resistor packs you mention...what is the pack? just a group of resistors all in one spot?

Thanks for responding and giving me something new to look for...went over the same damn thingsa so many times thinking maybe sometyhing changed or i missed something I was going nuts.

he might be talking about the little surface mounted square types...?

I don't pay attention to these sorts of things anymore. :)

good luck brother.
