Revival: Ms. Pac-Man

Lots of idiots here argue with that simple logic and shotgun everything.

Not a fan of changing them out either.

I haven't seen one person argue against "simple logic and shotgun everything."
Would love to see some examples of the idiots you're talking about.

Well, I think I bumped the monitor at some point in my work today. And things have changed. See attached image

Not sure what causes this. Or if I should be worried that it changed. Picture stays this way regardless if the end connector is plugged into the game boards or not.

Check the voltage at the ROMs, getting 4.8 volts on every ROM I checked. Still will not play Blind. Still have the hum from the speaker.

The monitor may be in partial colapse but it's hard to tell with out a game or tpg inputting video signal. The k4900 often has cold solder joints on many of the large resistors in the vert section and it causes partial verticle colapse. You can try smacking the cab on the side and see if it changes. I have a k4900 in an enduro racer right now doing something similar, rock the cab and the pic fills the screen, lol. Really you need to focus on one issue at a time or you'll drive yourself nuts.

Thanks, I'll give it a smack, just to see. I really want it to play blind before I do anything with the monitor. I need to sit down and read some of the websites about diagnosing and fixing Pacmans, Since I'm not sure where to go from here.

good progress, now your making think i should finish my ms pac....only a 4 year project.....its buried somewhere :)

keep it up!

Did some testing, and such, Using my limited knowledge base. the wiring on my end connector checks out, Fuse block replaced, and double checked my soldering job with the cap kit for the board. Still no changes, So the boards are going out for repairs. While they are out, I'm going to go ahead and do a cap kit on the monitor, just for good measure.

In the meantime, I decided to attack the CPO and see if I could get rid of the yellow paint. I attacked it with magic eraser, and simple green.

Wow, what a difference! here is the before

I'm trying to decide if I'm going to tape off, sand and repaint over the graffiti or not. I don't want to risk destroying the orginial CPO, now that it looks pretty damn good again.

Nice find. I like that you are keeping it in it's survivor state.
The graffiti as in the scratches above the stick? You could get some black vinyl material used for making signs. Cut it into a log strip and place it over the scratches. The weather it a bit to blend right in. Few would notice and it can be removed if this ever gets a full restore.

Cap kit done on the monitor. Right away, with no game boards. the lines are gone, as is the complete green screen. Powering it on, If I crank up the "Screen" knob, the entire screen turns yellow, and I can adjust colors with the color cutoff and drive knobs. I have everything set in center of the range for each knob for now. When I get the boards back from Repairs, then we will see how things really are. I don't have high expectations because the burn is so bad....

As long as the burn is ms pac it won't be that bad, especially since ms pac has the tinted cover over the tube.

Yep, I am lucky that the burn is Ms. pacman, as this is the original monitor. Although, It has spent most of it's life on Free-play, as the burn shows. It's not so bad behind the tinted cover, like you said. Eventually, I'm going to replace the tube. I've already started researching which TV's share the same tube as my WG K4900

Yea...New cap kit = Old flyback = BOOOM!!! I hate G07's for this...
Normally I agree with you, but with a G07 that's an exception. I put a new fly in them EVERY time I get one, at the same time I do caps. I've watched WAY too many original flybacks explode very shortly after a cap kit to go through THAT nonsense again. It's WAY worth the extra $20 to not have to rebuild the monitor again more than 50% of the time.

Progress! I heard back from Eugene, the gentleman that is repairing my boards this morning. Everything is good to go now. Here's what he had to say about the damage.

The board must been hit by voltage spike or something. Multiple bad ram and custom color chip bad. I installed the attract mode chip. So it can be on free play and still run the attract mode.

I don't know if Eugene is on here or not, but he just received the boards on Saturday, and they're repaired and ready to go out today which is Monday. Pretty damn quick turnaround if you ask me, the communication from him has been Top Notch. if he's on here, I'm definitely going to give him extremely positive feedback

Ms. Pacman is now 100% working, and has been stress tested. game ran for 24 hours with no problems whatsoever. Cosmetically, it needs to be cleaned more, I need to take care of some tape residue in a few places, and I need to take care of the scratches/graffiti on the metal above the CP overlay.

Overall, I'm happy with it. It's nice to be able to add one of my favorite games to my lineup!
