As I said in my Ms. Pac-man revival thread, I picked up both these machines from the same guy. Both came from the same location.

The Gyruss is the worst cabinet condition of the two machines. Pictures tell stories.

The big damage is the random hole in the side of the cab. It's about the size of the palm of my hand.

The damage knocked loose some supports inside the cab. the good news is, all the displaced supports were still inside the cab, and still in good shape.

The cab is really dirty on the outside, I have done some cleaning, but I have not got too crazy with it yet. The CP, bezel, and Marquee cleaned up really nice. Although I will need to get new tinted plexiglass, it has some nasty vandalism scratches.

(CP not cleaned in this shot)

The inside wasn't nearly as bad as Ms Pac-man

I was told, when it was plugged in, it would only have a grey screen. I plugged it in, and after a few minutes:

I was able to play for a while, and everything seems to work well. Although, When I unplugged it, and moved it, the Switcher finally completely gave up. I'm sending 120vac to the switcher, and only getting .003vdc from the +5vdc output, and zero on the -5 and +12. I already ordered a new switcher. In addition, I also replaced the starter on the marquee light, was able to bring it back to life also.

The plan for this one? Just like Ms. Pac-man, and Frogger, Preserve, and revive the machine. I like the worn look. With this one, I'm going to cut out the hole, and patch with another piece wood. I'm planning on making a mask, using the other side as a refrence, and repainting over the repair. Also, of course, I'm going to reinstall, and glue the supports that were broken loose back in place also. I'm planning on building up the spot with the T molding is chewed up, and replace the T-molding on that side.

Just like the Ms. Pac-man, as I make progress, I will post more. I'm kinda in a holding pattern until parts get here now.

Thanks guys! I just happened to catch the ad when it very first was posted, and was able to jump on it right away! Gyruss wasn't a game I had thought about, and I was planning on fixing and selling it. But, now that I have it, and have had a chance to play it, I really like the gameplay, and I'm planning on keeping it!

Today, My order came from Arcadeshop.com today. The work on Ms Pac-man was going to take some time, so I decided to attack Gyruss first. As expected, When I put the new switcher in, It came back to life and is working 100%, With the Marquee lighting up again, and new bulbs for the coin slots. It looks great, and plays well.

Now that it's working again, it's on to the cosmetic issues, like the hole in the side...

I decided it was time to fix the hole in the side of the cab. First step is the remove the monitor, and the boards.

Monitor and boards came out with no issues, and game me a little space to clean a little more.

All the harnesses, and the power supply were on the other side of the cab, so I left them intact, and covered the Switcher, to keep sawdust out of it.

Hole was marked out with tape, and then marked out with sharpie. Cut hole was 4" x 5"

Only one thing to do at this point, Cut away. I used a small battery powered circular saw, with a fresh blade, and plunge cut into the cab.
picture.php

I used a small battery powered sawzall to finish the cuts. then I used a piece of furniture grade 3/4 plywood to make the patch. I know it's not what the cab is made of, but it was what I could find on the remnant shelf at my local lumber store. Besides, I don't like partial board, and when everything is 100% done, the only way anyone will be able to tell, will be looking from the inside.

Finally, I glued in the patch, and reinforced it from the backside.

For the short term, this is done. I'm taking 4 of my games (Ms. Pacman, Gyruss, Frogger, and Popeye) to the NWPAC in Tacoma this weekend (June 8th, 9th, and 10th 2018) and I needed to get the hole taken care of for that. Overall, the plan is to sand, bondo, and repaint this whole side, but this will not be for a bit.

In addition, I replaced the damaged feet with locking caster wheels. This is also a fairly temporary thing, Until I'm able to source new feet. This isn't the only machine that needs new feet. In addition, As seen in the picture of my arcade corner, I have a bookshelf that I am blocking with Gyruss.

I don't really have anywhere else to put this bookshelf. So for now I need to be able to easily move the machine. My plan ultimately is to get a smaller couch, with will allow me to move a machine beside the frogger, and free up access to the bookshelf. In addition, I plan on getting rid of the love seat that is currently in front of popeye, and use stools instead. This will allow me to move Ms. Pacman closer to the front door, and free up space for a machine beside Ms. Pacman, that will not be blocking the bookshelf.

Oh the joys of a small house, and no extra rooms.
