Revenge of Doh

Not saying people aren't potentially paying stupid prices for this for some reason, but it just seems like a weird title to become price hyped.

1 thing i see often w/valuation here is that the gen pop recognition isn't considered. this is one of those games that Average Joe & Jane played back in the day at their local pizza hut. "outside" awareness can up the $$ in this hobby.

The board sets are widely available too.

not really, imo.

There's also a ton of bootlegs of Arkanoid out there. Harder to find a genuine one. Especially in the cocktail format.

@mdeslaur hacked roms allow for cocktsil support on all original hardware (99.64% sure) now. So you don't need the super hard to find original romset that I finally tracked down with the generosity of @mattosborn right before he did them.

No hacking the board, just a rom swap and mcu defeat that plugs in where the mcu used to go. So you can always go back to "stock" easily for the purest of purists.

Sorry to derail the thread a bit above.
I do think DoH is awesome and love my cocktail doh more than both the standup arks I've had.

I'm under the impression DOH is not as widespread as good ole' regular Arkanoid, but I also didn't think it was particularly rare either.

I've owned my DOH since 1997-ish (and still enjoy it), so this is coming from the POV of someone that hasn't been on the look out for a DOH in decades. I keep meaning to pick up an original Arkanoid and TE PCB to toss in there as well, but I foolishly keep telling myself they'll always be widely available for cheap forever (famous last words). :p

Yep. I'm aware. But I like my authentic PCB! LOL.

I'm the exact opposite. I have Ark, and Tournament Ark, but keep putting off picking up Doh (although I did finally get the adapter so that I can play it in my Arkanoid cabinet)

I have the first 3 Arkanoids and bought them all online for between $90 and $160 shipped in 2020 & 2021.

Official Taito boards.

Great series but don't overpay for these, in my opinion. The cocktail boards might be a different animal—I can't speak on those.

EDIT:

Dug up the dates & exact prices…

Complete prices with taxes, fees, & shipping:

Arkanoid ($103 shipped in October 2020)

Arkanoid Tournament ($103 in November 2020)

Revenge of DOH ($162 June 2021)

Not 100% sure if this was answered or not, but there was no dedicated cabinet for ROD.
\

Merit SuperTop 1986 Arkanoid, I believe, was the only US licensed "dedicated" cabinet. "Dedicated" meaning it was made at the factory, sold and licensed as a complete unit.

Original Arkanoid came in that countertop cabinet (I have one), but Revenge of Doh didn't come in a dedicated format like that.

people debate whether arkanoid kits that were made into countertops by merit are "dedicated" b/c the cabinet isn't from taito. i could not care less but FYI.

they look like awesome little games!

me wants one.

I think Arkanoid was the first and only countertop game I ever came across back in the day.

At the bar in a Bennigan's restaurant in Atlanta, GA in 1989 or 1990 I'd guess.
