Retrobotics Arcade

And once I find a dedicated MH cabinet, it'll be my favorite Trio!

Been there, done that. You won't be disappointed. LOL :)
(But, of course, I added ROTJ to my "favorite pedestal row").

My "favorite row" is all Atari vectors in a common cabinet shape (SD/GRAV/BW/MHconv/ZVGmulti/Q) ... wow, my arcade rows have changed some since 2016 ... sometimes moving games around does make sense - even if some end up in the kitchen.

Not interested in ROTJ, but I would be interested in building a *paperboy* in a ROTJ cab.

I also have a second Firefox cabinet I'd like to build a Cloak and Dagger in.

C&D in a FF/I,R type pedestal? Fascinating.
If you make some nice custom artwork (side art, marquee, CPO based on the proto) I'd be interested. :)

Hear me out.

Cloak and Dagger was primarily released as a conversion kit right between Firefox and I Robot chronologically... If they had gone for a wider dedicated release maybe they'd have done a pedestal?

The Firefox cab I've got I received from @Dillweed and was already converted rather nicely to Rescue Raider, so it's already cut (and fairly nicely) to use dual Joysticks so I think it'll be a nice conversion.

Yes I think the Proto art I think is definitely a better fit as the other pedestal cabs predominately used black/dark colors. I think I'd want to do an artwork pallete swap.

Food Fight has made it into the Arcade! I'm very happy with this one. It looks pretty awesome in person. (Before and After Shots Here!) For now, it will take the spot that will eventually belong to I Robot when I finish that project. Finishing I Robot is going to trigger a major reorganization of the Arcade anyway. Plan is to kick all the 90s games except X-Men and maybe Smash TV out into the hall lol.

In any case, I think this may be the overall nicest restoration I've done. Hard to believe this thing came out of an abandoned-for-30-years crackhouse.

A keeper for sure.
Heh, sitting there like a Boss!

So.... As is tradition, one project leaves the workshop, another enters.

As Food Fight has left, Today's entrant is....

Williams' INFERNO

Never expected to find this one in the wild. Let alone an actual, factual cabinet. Hell, the only one I've ever played was the one at Galloping Ghost which is in a Joust cab, but man I love the game. It's the perfect vibe for the kind of things I like. Spooky, interesting to play, fast paced, twinstick.... This will be something rewarding to work on.

Here's how I first saw it, as a listing on FB Marketplace.

I was just scrolling by and saw this thing, and in idle passing of the listing, I didn't think much of it. I saw the Turtles in Time CPO and assumed it was some weird fucked up Joust (again, who expects to see an Inferno in the wild?). Being the dumbass that I am, I actually posted a link to the listing in the Overtime Arcade discord server, thinking someone might want to grab it for the TMNT PCB. In the split second after I hit the enter key, I did a double take and realized what I'd done. Instead of unsending said post, I made the second mistake. I publicly identified it in the server.

"wait"
"WAIT"
"THAT IS A MOTHER FUCKING INFERNO!"

Thankfully, the community in that server are awesome people, and they actually helped me get the machine! @Dillweed in particular grabbed it for me and sent it on over (So special thanks to him!). I am grateful for all of them though, and I am hopeful that'll be the last journey this machine takes, as I feel it's definitely saveable.

Now, onto the condition! (There will definitely be a pickup video coming, but I'm too hype to wait)

Unfortunately there's really not a lot left of Inferno in here. Both back doors are present, but the top one is nailed in place. There is a Williams Power supply in the correct position for Inferno. The original (numbers matching) power brick is present, as is the original matching 4900 monitor (which is working). The coin bucket (and lid labelled INFERNO) is present. The rest is gone or hacked up. No CPO art under the TMNT. No sideart under the black paint. I checked :(

As for numbers matching though, the number on this machine is particularly interesting!

This is the second Inferno to roll off the Williams Assembly Line!!! I guess with such a low production number, it's more "likely" to find a lower number, but it's still super cool to see. I wonder what the story of this machine is. And to any of you out there with loose Inferno PCBs... Got the PCB for my cabinet?? Given the low run of cabs, the odds could be as high as 1 in 12!

I'm hopeful I'll be able to find most of the parts for this eventually. Probably a Joust 2 PCB for sure. I'm so excited to do this. I really hope I don't fuck it up.

Here are a few extra pics:

Halloween 2024 Arcade Decor. Didn't go as hard as last year as the big arcade party got cancelled :/

Had some coworkers over on a separate day though that definitely weren't arcade nerds. Watching people play, the most popular games were:
  • Addams Family - By Far
  • Food Fight
  • Sinistar
  • Lunar Lander
I saw every game get played at least once except for:
  • Centipede
  • Space Duel
  • Asteroids (What are these people doin'?)

So weird. Centipede is usually the only game I play in my own arcade and it's the first game I play at someone else's house. If they don't have it, I call them dicks and leave.

That's why it's the highest production run pinball of all time ... 20,000+ (for comparative purposes, most pinballs in that timeframe sold 2,000 to 4,000 units).

Easily recognizable theme by the masses, decent layout (for the era), not overly complicated ruleset, and generally fun to play.

Forgot to post a year in review at the new year... So posting it now.

Pickups in 2024, in order:
  • Dig Dug Cocktail (Working)
  • Konami Cabinet (Project, will be Aliens)
  • Q*Bert (Working)

  • Battlezone (Dead, Repaired)
  • Addams Family (Working)
  • Sinistar (Dead, Repaired)
  • Galaga (Project, Restored)
  • Roadblasters Cockpit (RIP)
  • Star Trek Cockpit (RIP)
  • Tempest #2 (Dead, Repaired)
  • I Robot (Project)
  • Firefox #2 (Empty)
  • Centipede #2 (RIP)

  • Inferno (Project)
  • Joust Bootleg (Dead, Repaired)
  • Q*Bert (Project)

What Left:
  • Tempest #2 - Went on to a great new home. Sold it to help fund the I Robot restoration effort.
  • Our Dynamo HS5 - Went out in a Trade
  • Jungle King - Went out in a Trade
  • Roadblasters Cockpit - Death By Termites
  • Star Trek Cockpit - Death By Termites

  • Lunar Lander finally became fully operational
  • Robotron finally got an original boardset, replacing the JROK I had been running in it.
Coolest Pickup: Inferno (Or Addams if you count pins)
Crazy finds are still out there, and they can happen to anyone. I never thought I'd find an actual Inferno. I knew I wanted one, but I thought I'd have to do a scratch build. As it stands, I hope to have this game completed in time for my next Halloween party. It's close.

If you count Pins, Addams was the huge grail of the year, and my wife and I made an awesome road trip out of it, to Chicago where we got to experience Galloping Ghost. It was a great time... And then we got Sinistar the next day. What a crazy weekend.

Biggest Money Pit: I Robot (Again if you don't count pins)
I bought this cabinet for $500. But it is probably the worst condition cabinet I've actually kept. It was water damaged. It was beat to hell and chopped up. It was FIRE DAMAGED. This thing isn't even close to complete, and I've already spent significantly more money on it than any other video game in our collection, and I know I'm going to have to spend plenty more on it to get it working. I think it's best for me to avoid speculating too much on whether or not at the end of the day, it'd have been cheaper to just buy a nice I Robot than to attempt to fix this one.... Guess we will find out if and when it gets finished. (Someone sell me a control panel pretty please....)

Best Experience: The West Virginia Arcade Raid
This was our first actual arcade raid. Even if it wasn't as great a success as we had hoped (what with the copper thieves and the missing games) I was still really happy with the experience, and the story of finding and negotiating for the games. I only ended up keeping one game from the Raid - Food Fight - and it turned out absolutely gorgeous. So that is a nice reminder of the story for me.

Worst Experience: Termite Trek and Bug Blasters
Not all raids end out well. Some turn out to be nightmares. When I thought that a $300 Complete Star Trek Captains Chair and Roadblaster Cockpit was too good to be true, I probably should have listened to my gut. Those cabs were infested with termites. At the end of the day I probably spent well over a grand on the games and mitigating the issues, not to mention my time, and wound up scrapping both cabinets anyway. Termites aren't worth the risk.

What I'm looking forward to in 2025:
As far as restorations go, my highest priority projects are Inferno and I Robot. I'm really hoping I can get those two running in 2025. The second Q*Bert I'm hoping to turn into a Q*Bert qubes as well, but that'll hopefully come after those two. We shall see. The control panel for I Robot in particular seems to be a tricky piece to get.

As far as pickups go, what I'm crossing fingers for in 2025 would be at least one more color vector title, and another pin. Tapper is I think the number one game on my wife's list also. I have some custom builds planned as well, such as a Cloak and Dagger construction, but that more falls into the project area. I think at this point, we've chewed through a lot of the "easier to find" titles on our wanted list, so now it's into the more expensive territory. Will that mean that our pace of pickups will slow down significantly? I would think so... But that's what I said last year. And in retrospect, looking at what we found in 2025, we got insanely lucky overall. Several monster pickups all in one year. Can't wait to see what 2025 will bring.
