I have been wanting to ask this for awhile. Can an aged but working flyback result in a poorer quality picture over time like caps do? IE blurriness, overall sharpness etc. Obviously a cap kit usually fixes these issues and some people won't replace a flyback when doing full caps if it indeed works. Will an even better picture be produced when replacing the flyback along with the caps? I am one of the people that don't install new flybacks when doing caps, unless the flyback is bad.

Yes, a bad flyback can result in blurriness and a dim picture. The flyback controls the focus and brightness so if either of these pots on the flyback are bad then you will get the symptoms you described.

Alrighty then, looks like I have $200 worth of FB's to buy.

The flyback isn't the sole cause of a dim, fuzzy picture - although it can be. If you've got a weak picture tube, it will be dim and/or fuzzy as well.

Is the remedy for a weak tube a rejuve?

Or replacement. Some weak tubes rejuvinate well, others don't. No way to tell until you try. But if you test the tube and it tests strong, then it's the flyback. Don't try to rejuve a tube that doesn't need it.

yes, in some cases though. one of the causes for a dim picture is that the CRT guns just get dirty. rejuvenators just "zap" them with a a lot of juice and it burns all the junk off the guns, resulting in a cleaner image. a side effect of the rejuve however is that it will diminish the overall life of the tube. so that's the trade-off: shitty picture for a longer time, or nicer picture for a shorter time. :)

sometimes it's hopeless and won't work and then you have to go the geeky tube-swap route.

Typically an old flyback that I'd consider needing replacement would cause drifting/snapping/changing brightness/focus. An old flyback may have drifted from its original brightness/focus, but if you adjust it, you should be able to make it look good and have it staying good.

If you just can't get the brightness/focus looking good, I'd look elsewhere (unless you're at the end of the flyback pot travel, then it could be the flyback). I personally wouldn't replace "aged" flybacks, except maybe in the case of the G07, and that'd only be if I'm already pulling the chassis (I'd replace a G07 to prevent having to deal with the commonly exploding/smoking flyback). Otherwise, new or old, flybacks could die at any time.
