…I seriously don't know why this bugs me, (me of all people, Read: Purple DK). But every time I see a "Restored" Nintendo cab with those shiny, crap, non-Asahi Seiko roll down mechs it just triggers me a tiny bit. lol

Anyone else have a constant pet peeve like this?

The top left ones are coin controls clones of the asahi mechs (or clones of the clones). They were common replacements back in the day and were even found on games like Sega/Gremlin Head On. I made the choice to use them on my Head On N because of that. I've seen them on several of my Nintendo cabinets when I got them and if they weren't in abysmal shape I would have kept them.

Preach on!. It's especially bad because the correct mechs are fully available.

Incorrect buttons also drive me crazy because of all the trouble put into doing correct repros.

I'm also getting to the point where I won't consider a painted Nintendo cab. 🧐

What's correct? My original DK junior has a type different than all 4 pictured above.

That reminds me, I need to fix this on my Nintendos. I restored mine before the better repros were made.

The one in Chance's pic is CA Calle brand.

Yeah and they make both in that pic. They are rather inexpensive compared to the Asahi ones. I was just pointing out that coin controls also made them. I used these for my Head On N project. That said, all my original Nintendo cabs are Asahi mechs. I just wish the new faceplates for the 740 were available. I could have sworn that Asahi no longer made specifically the 730 and 740 found on Nintendo cabs. I was under the assumption that whatever Mike had left on his site was it for new ones.

I still have to go to the hardware store to see if I can find U-bolts that fit the asahi mechs. I have a few that are missing them.

Thats a lot of words more than "I'm sorry, I'll try to do better." LOL 😜

Hey now… I think we all can agree that some of us can do amazing things with a rattle can. ☺️

The cocktail ones with the flap don't count. …wait, what?

@SNESNESCUBE64 not gonna your build thread and a recent Facebook sale thread of a "Fully" restored DKjr cab is what finally set me off to make that meme. ☺️
You can remedy the issue by mailing me some new Asahi mechs. I'd be more than happy to throw a set of really nice Asahi mechs. Otherwise I think the ones I threw on there look nice enough.

Should I have kept the nasty painted ones that didn't have the actual mechs instead? (Oh yeah by the way the cab was painted green by the previous owner). The painted Asahi mech people are the ones you should be going after.

I have it on good authority that most Nintendo collectors have a stash of old used mechs. You should be able to scrounge a better set than that ☺️. I'd offer a pair up, but @Lamonsoff already cleaned me out with his last project.

It goes deep.

I'm not sure I've ever seen those coin return "loops" on real Nintendo cabs either, especially not the 740 (push button). There should be the "ears" on there, like @SNESNESCUBE64 's picture.

Also, there are two types of "ears". I believe the original are the smaller variation. https://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=COINRETNSM The big ear Alfred E. Newman variation is no bueno.

Even the 730s I've seen tend to have the "ears" instead of the "loops" for the coin returns.

@JamBurglar I've seen the loops a handful of times. I've seen them more on 730s though. Most american ones I find have those terrible "ears". My radarscope I don't know because it was missing it's coin door. Donkey kong clearly had ears at first, but I replaced it with a faceplatw kit from Mike's Arcade when he had them available. My Dk Jr and dk3 (previously donkey kong jr) have ears. My Head On N (originally a donkey kong) had ears. The tables seem to be a different story though. My helifire table is missing the hook but I see outlines for where it was. My space fever also has a hook.

It's weird. I was going for a joke originally of trying to have a different coin door config on each one of my Nintendo cabinets, but I have too many now.

I think I tend to agree that most had those stupid ears. One thing to note is you can always tell if it had one but was missing because you will either see grime or scratches outlining it.
