I picked this up in April for free, as you can see this will be pretty easy to restore:

I figured all I needed to do was install a cap kit as the monitor is a little narrow and apply the side art I picked up. Then I noticed these extra carriage bolts:

So the operator must have installed these to make the bezel more secure. After taking the bolts out the lower ones will be covered by the side art:

Lower Left bolt:

Upper left bolt:

If I move the artwork to the right about a 1/4 inch the upper bolt hole should be covered too.

Right side lower bolt:

Right side upper bolt:

Here is the side art positioned to cover the upper bolt too:

And, I have the monitor out and discarged ready to be capped. I left paper bezel on as I don't want to replace it and it is in great shape.

Awesome find, nice condition.
Get rid of the extra carriage bolts, they are of no use.
And if the wooden piece on the inside falls of, screw it.
I mean, screw in into place or use wood glue.

Oh those bolts serve no function other than to stop people from pushing the bezel into the cabinet. The bolts are going, and I have color matched oil based enamel that I will touch up the holes after I fill them in with bondo. It depends on how the touch up looks, I might move the art to cover, or just keep it in the original position.

How did you score this for free? And why can't I find a free dk or galaga?? Nice score nonetheless... ;)

It was thanks to the Broodwich, he sent me a CL listing for a SI that was right next to my house with no mention of price. E-mail him and don't hear back for over a day, so I figure it is gone. Then I get a call and find out it is free, I go to pick it up and I see the Junior under a moving cloth with only the tiniest bit of the bottom orange exposed, but I instantly recognized the cabinet. It was tucked in the corner of the gigantic dark basement under boxes etc. The SI was on the opposite side of the basement. I asked him if he wanted to sell the Junior and he said he was keeping it for his adult son. I said OK, well if you change your mind I would be willing to buy it from him.

I load up the SI and get it home and put it in the basement eat dinner and he calls me back and says if I want the Junior I can come get it. So I picked it up the next morning. :D

Shout out to my 518 crew!!

I installed the cap kit last night and the monitor is all dialed in, hard to capture with a cell phone:

Now I just need to figure out the positioning of the side art:

I will probably start another thread.

That thing looks fantastic. I still can't believe you got this game for free! I've been playing DK Jr a lot lately and I enjoy it more than DK. Nice job on the restore!

Very nice indeed -- looks great!

DK Jr was one of my arcade mainstays back in the day; always loved the orange cab!

It really did come out great. I feel like it was the easiest restore I have ever done. You can't even see the one hole on the right side that I filled and painted. That color matched oil based enamel is great. I ended up painting only an area the size of a dime for each hole, and only one was not covered by the new side art.

Looks good Tighe. Love the Moneyshot:

Are you gonna replace the base?

Thanks Phet, that meants a ton coming from you!!!! :D

I haven't laid her down yet to check it out the condition of the base. Obviously it is dinged up some. I will be adding tee nuts like you did to your Junior cabaret, although I will be putting casters on the bottom, those cabinets are a bitch to move, and I haven't decided a layout for my basement yet, so I need to be able to move them easily without damaging them. Also the casters will add the extra height I need so I don't have to hunch to play the game.

I hope at some point to have the basement floor at lease epoxied that way I can switch to just regular leg levelers on the Nintendo cabinets with magic sliders. My basement concrete is as rough as 60 grit sandpaper.

All my games have casters currently with the exception being my 4 Nintendo cabinets. Even the Red Tent has casters:
