Restoring a Super Pac Cocktail

Some progress pics from the past few days.

I took a photo of the coin door before disassembly. Also a mockup pic of my cleaned up parts mounted temporarily on a takeman repro door. I was going to use the repro door and save the original door for another later Midway project, but it appears that the cocktail version of the door has a tiny mounting bracket to aid in mounting the coin counter in between the coin chutes. It's possible to mount the coin counter on Takeman's door, but there's no where to put the top screw. You can see a peek of the top bracket (and the screw) in the before pic above the coin counter. I had no idea this little bracket was there - I wonder if Takeman knows this. I'll wait until my OEM door comes back from the painter.

Also snapped a shot of the mess from control panel teardown.

Nice once you install the laminate I'm interested to see how it looks..I have two older midway cocktails to restore and will use same laminate most likely if needed.

I'm supposed to pick up the laminate today. With any luck I'll do it this weekend.

My coin door badge arrived yesterday.

I managed to find some Imonex coin mechs too - should make for trouble-free operation for the next owner.

You're going through all this only to sell it? You must enjoy the process more than the play. :D

Man, that coin door is looking sweet.

I remember restoring my Galaga and Pacman cocktails, TONS of work and details. Harder to restore a cocktail than an upright IMO.

Great thread. Thanks for all the details on your bondo work. Nice restore!!

Not much to report after this weekend. I was distracted by other things.

I DID, however make it to Home Depot to pick up my roll of laminate. I snapped a quick photo of it in the garage before leaving for work this AM.

I think this will be a good match.

I don't have it anymore but I used to have a Super Pac-Man cocktail. I was able to get an underlay on E-bay for $40. The colors weren't spot on, but not bad. I love Super Pac but didn't care much for the cocktail cabinet. I hung onto it for 5 years and traded it for a beautiful Asteroids upright. Very happy.

Just to frustrate me, I decided to log my expenses:

  • Auction winning bid plus fees & taxes: $415
  • Replacement wiring harness, extra control panels, brick: $150
  • Monitor rebuild kit: $46
  • Imonex Coin mechs: $12 (1 to spare)
  • Midway Coin Door badge: $15
  • T-molding, leg levelers: $45
  • Woodgrain Laminate: $78
  • Artwork: underlay & CPO's: $120
  • Game pcb: (pulled from storage): $50
  • Replacement Glass: ???
  • Powdercoating: ??
  • Midway power supply (pulled from storage): $25
  • power supply rebuild kit: ??
  • Misc supplies (sandpaper, rubber cement, bondo, etc) $25

Total so far: $981. Ugh. And I still have to pay the glass guy and the painter.

I SHOULD be able to sell some of my extra parts though.

  • Extra control panels: $50
  • Extra power brick: $25
  • Ms Pac pcb: $50
  • Extra Coin Co and Imonex coin mechs: $20
  • Hacked harness: $10
Total: $155

But that will pretty much net me on the remaining glass and powder coating cost. Either way you look at it, I'm into this thing for nearly a grand at this point, and that's not counting my time and labor.

Parts still needed: manual

Weather has begun to warm up. That's nice. I'm back in the garage now.

I was able to unroll the sheet of laminate I got at home depot to compare it to my cabinet. It's a pretty close match. I'll be pretty happy. I MIGHT even be able to get away with not having to laminate the control panels it's such a close match.

I had a few spare minutes so I turned my attention to the leg leveler plates. I ran the wire wheel on the drill until the battery crapped out, so I figured I'd grab a before and after shot of the plates. Big difference, for sure. Not sure if I'll paint them or not; I might just rub some 3-in-1 oil on them and leave them be.

The past 2 days have been mentally challenging for me with this project. At $78 a sheet, I really didn't want to mess up this laminate install. Having never done it before, I really wanted to be careful. I've read horror stories of other people who have ripped their laminate trying to cut it with power tools, cracking it, scoring it and having their knives fall out of line, etc. I really wanted to take care to do this right.

What's worse, 2 of the sides are recessed, meaning there's absolutely no way I can use a flush trim bit on a router to trim to size after application. That meant I needed to have a perfectly sized piece BEFORE I glued it down. I managed to fabricate a jig out of a few straight pieces of 1x6 pine to allow me to nibble off a little bit at a time with the router until I had each end piece perfectly square and the perfect dimensions. Too skinny and the laminate wouldn't fill the whole space; too wide and I'd get bubbles trying to force it to fit.

After much painstaking fiddling around and measuring eleventy times, I was able to get the 2 pieces I needed to install on the short sides. Daylight was fast leaving me tonight, so I really only had enough time to glue one piece down. Here's a shot of the first piece, right after I rolled it with the J-roller.

Oooooooh.....daddy likey.

I got 2 more sides glued on today, and routed the edges and holes for speakers. Things are looking really good now. The last side has the hinge, so I have to do that side in parts. I had to separate the table top from the top half of that side, and it was glued and screwed together. Removing it will make painting the table top much easier, as well as allow me some more room to install the laminate too.

Moar pics!!

One last shot of the full cabinet, all of the laminate is done at this point. Once I repaint the table top, I will reglue it to the hinge side.
