Well, I got my outrun board bench tested, and everything seems to work, though my bench analog controls are very poor.

Anyway, I took an inventory of the parts, and I am missing:

speakers/marquee/marquee light
audio amp board
b-gear
all of the wiring (ALL!)
pots from the pedals
power supply (I can use a switcher for the logic levels, but not the motors)
cooling fan

The control panel and monitor surround are both damaged pretty bad, the a-gear is cracked, the shaker is unknown, but missing some bolts, and the cabinet needs some love as well. I have the steering wheel (sans logo), but the rest of its assembly is pretty beat up and rusty. I don't think the pedals are original, as the manual shows them mounted to the floor, but these are on a panel in the cabinet (and there are bolt hols on the floor).

It would be a LOT of effort to get this outrun back into a usable form, but I don't remember it being that good of a game. It was supposed to be complete when I got it, but I had a couple other projects ahead of it, so I put it in a corner until now and just realized that it is missing a lot. I should have checked it out earlier, but the monitor was disconnected and I got it from a reputable (I thought) guy. My fault, but now I have to figure out what to do with it.

Any idea what these parts would cost? My guesses are below.

speakers - 10-15 (stereo)
marquee - 30-40
marquee light - 10
audio amp board - ?
b-gear - 80
all of the wiring (ALL!) - $$$ (stupid weird connectors)
pots from the pedals - 5-6
power supply - 50
cooling fan - 5-10

It looks like at least a couple hundred just to get it working, not to mention making it look decent. I am leaning toward parting it out.

Anyone care to talk me out of it?

I can hook you up with:
The pedal pots (I think), marquee light, cooling fan, speakers and I have a Turbo Outrun marquee thats pretty nice. Yours if you want them. But, after re-reading your post, thats alot of work/money/parts to get it in decent shape. You can pick up a working one for under 200.

I didn't realize they were that cheap... I really paid too much for this.

I really appreciate the offer on the parts, but I think this is a dead end project now.

Ive seen working boards go for 150+. Hell, I sold 2 non working boards for 60 a piece.

No kidding? Is it that good of a game?

I remember the local chuck e cheese having one that was on rollers so that the whole cockpit rotated in the turns. That was awesome! Unfortunately that version was HUGE and the motion was the best part.

This game baffles me why the parts are so expensive. It must be a Sega thing.

And FYI, Atari 5k pots (Star Wars, Paperboy, etc) do not work in Outrun. The shaft of Atari pots is ever so slightly larger in diameter than the sega pots. The D gear will not fit on the shaft.
