I know a lot of you guys say use http://www.novuspolish.com/products.html but I don't have any on hand today. I do have some other products that have not worked for me in the past.

How the heck can I restore these 30 year old buttons. What makes the novus better than all the other polishes?

Has anyone tried wet sanding them with 1000 grit? Then shine them back up with some polish. Would I mess them up?

that's not really dirt or scum it's just abrasion marks. I'd just use a high speed buffer and a torch to get those marks out, or better yet considering how much time i'd be spending trying to rescue a 2.00 button i'd just splurge on a few new buttons :)

You'll have to go higher than 1000 grit before polish. You'll need to get up to 200, 2500, and 3000 and then polish. I've got Novus, and I think after you've gone the route of e sandpaper, you'll be fine with your rubbing compound and polish.

I'm with ProK on this. You'll be spending more on sandpaper than you would on new buttons. Just buy 'em.
