Restoration of Galaga '88 Number 448

Looks great! Now I need to convince you to do mine.... :)

I just need to do my cab. New cpo, logo stick, marqee, and coin door have been done. I just need the time to give the main cab some work.

Mike

Sure Mike! Actually, PM me. We can probably do something like that. I have a Pacmania cab that I want to do as well. We could knock them out in an afternoon!

Be careful cleaning this type of monitor as the aquadag that is painted on the back of the tube is water soluble.

I have done this, and it wasn't hard to fix, but I wanted to note that I have washed 4 Sanyo 20EZ monitors and only one had water soluble aquadag.

Good to know Tighe. Do you have a source for the Aquadag you can post?

It is in this thread.

I used actual aquadag from eBay $15. But you can just use a spray can of graphite lubricant from places like Grainger. Of course if you use the spray kind you need to mask of the tube where you don't want the aquadag, like the above cup and under the yoke.

Check out the thread there is a link to the antique radio forums where they used the spray.

Very cool. May have to look into getting a small bottle for the inevitable time I'll need it.

UPDATE!!!

Look what came in the mail from djdaveofkc! NOS ARTWORK!!!! Big thanks to him for providing me with such rare items!

While I was happy with the repro CPO and Marquee I had, I was concerned about the color match between the two. The marquee I got from Rich is a little more purple than the Quarterarcade CPO. Being the idiot I am, I decided to hunt for some NOS Artwork.

Here we have repro, NOS, and original from top to bottom. The NOS marquee is a slightly different shade of blue, and the pinks are less saturated than the repro. I'll be offering this to Rich for him to compare to the scans he has of another NOS marquee. It's quite possible that the NOS marquee I have has faded even though it was never installed, and that Rich's previous scan is of a less faded one. Here they are lit up.

NOS

Reproduction

I'm not sure which I like better. The pink in the NOS looks very light to me although the photo makes it look lighter than it is. I'll have to think about it a bit. Basically I like the look of NOS when the machine is off, and the repro when it's on. It's quite clear that Rich's repro is of much higher quality than the original, being both thicker and less prone to scratches. Rich provides an invaluable service to us in this hobby!!!

Now the CPO.

It's fun to compare the quarter arcade CPO to the original as well. I'm not sure who was responsible for the artwork (perhaps Rich as well???), but it's spot on. In fact, some flaws in the original have been corrected on the repro. It's actually wide enough to cover the CP completely as well, which the NOS isn't. I don't think that's due to shrinkage as the paper on the back is the same size. Great to know there is a quality repro of this rare item out there.

One of the fun things I found out was that the original CPO had texture to it. I always just assumed the repro had been made using textured plastic because that was what was available. My original CPO is shiny and smooth...except under the buttons! I never thought to look carefully at the unfaded portion of the CPO under the buttons. Under a magnifier it's clear that it is textured and that the rest of the CPO is smooth due to wear!

This has been a really fun project and I've appreciated all the feedback I've received from you all! Now all I need to find is a pair of NOS plastic button cones...

question about PS

Hi Today i pulled out my 88. I want to replace the transformer , PS where can i purchase it ?? Like the one you have ?

Heres a Pic of mines...

As far as replacing the transformer is concerned, the key here is what type of monitor you have. The Sanyo monitors that came with the games run on 100 volts. Non Sanyos generally use 120 volts. Check to see what type of monitor you have in your cab and report back. Both arcadeshop and Bob Roberts carry isolation transformers but you'll need to make sure the one you get puts out the right voltage.

Nintendo monitor. So the isolation transformer needs to be able to output 100V. To my surprise, Bob Roberts no longer carries them. Arcade shop has one, but it doesn't state whether it puts out 100v or not. Your best bet may be putting an ad in the wanted section on this forum.

Just wondering why you're replacing it. They usually don't fail. If it still works you can clean up the original easily with some sand paper.

Bob has not had those transformers for several years... I inquired a long time ago for a game that was missing one...

i fig i put in a new one. being i'm putting in new switching power supply . .

ok i'll clean it out and install it back in...

thanks everyone...

Whatever new transformer you buy, I'm betting it is not as good as the old one in the cabinet. They don't really wear out, they can get melted/short from a power spike or too much load. I wouldn't replace it with some Chinese made transformer.

Hi Maxstang, will you take a look at my Galaga 88 thread and see if you can answer a few of my questions in it? Thanks :)
