Rescuing Donkey Kong Junior

if you want a easy fix i have a tested working dk jr board for sale at 80 shipped, pix avail. scott

oh yeah, saw a dk board on ebay with eight ball action in it. should i... hehehe

No...

DKJr chipsets are cheap since they get taken off boards when converting them to DDK... You'd have to have someone burn new DK color proms and that's not necessarily cheap.

Well, i replaced the socket, and still have basically the same garbage. what is the next likely candidate to check? i did reseat all the proms today again.

I guess its time to find my multimeter?

WOOHOO! after staring at just about every socketed chip on the dkjr board and then looking over my popeye cocktail board i noticed the labeling on the popeye cpu chip, z80a... looking back on the jr board the chip is not labeled z80a.

it is a MAB2650A
7983
GHG8316 MOY

So after swapping the cpu from the popeye into junior...IT WORKS!!!

Ok, so im feeling kinda stupid for not realizing this sooner. I have had this chip in my hands on at least 4 different occasions. from what i read about the dk to 8ball conversion you just pop the z80 out put in the sub board and put the z80 back in the sub board. i guess either this was different for the dkjr conversion or it was just a plain screwy conversion done to my machine. ok so now i need to add a cpu to my list of things i need from Bob Roberts.

So my new problem is juniors sounds are kinda messed up. the volume of the music is very low and the jump sounds are not right. Also the sounds are crackly and the volume drops out sometimes. should i get the audio board repair kit for it or could it be something else? The monitor is beautiful and does not need a cap kit.

One other thing. i knocked off the heat sink from the small chip on the video board. what do you guys recommend i use to put it back on?

Ok so junior has been rescued from 8ball action, but now he has a sore throat. hehehe

Thanks for all the help so far.

By all means rebuild the sound board. This is a common necessity with those....

Any good glue should work, although there is a heat sink compound that helps with the heat transfer better.....
