Hey all,

Okay, if this thread is in the incorrect location, I apologize. As it's not really a repair question I think I am okay.

Anyway, recently I purchased two complete untested boardsets from a fellow KLOVer: Targ and Spectar. I finally managed to scrounge up enough free time to test them in my dedicated Targ Cabaret.

First up for testing was the Targ boardset. I connected it up, plugged it right in, smelled/saw no smoke, and BINGO Targ on the screen fully functional! Win freaking win baby! This means my Targ Cabaret should be running for a good while.

Now on to the Spectar boardset. The first thing I did was verify that Targ and Spectar use the same pinout, which they do. In fact they use the same boards really. So, after doing that verification I connected the boardset, plugged the machine in, and BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE! Well boom goes the capacitor on the CPU board at C20. I immediately unplugged the machine and the "the flames died down.".

My question/request is, does anyone have a working Spectar boardset? If so, can you please take a few high quality/resolution pictures of it for me? Preferably the CPU daughterboard.

Please and thank you!

Spectar is a straight ROM swap with Targ so both boards should be completely identicle except maybe for an extra EPROM or two.
I've got one with a cap blown off the board also, in fact I think it might be the same one, C20 sounds familiar! The manual with the schematics is available for download through KLOV.

That's what I gathered from the information I've dug up so far. The only thing that was weird between the two Targ boardsets and the Spectar boardset is that on the little board attached to the main motherboard of the Spectar boardset there are a few "missing" capacitors and one diode. That is to say, in spots on the little board for the Targ boardsets there are capacitors which are not present in the equivalent locations on the little board for the Spectar boardset. It doesn't appear like anyone had desoldered some caps and removed them.

Is this normal or should I install caps in these spots so that the little board for the Spectar boardset matches the little board for the Targ boardset?

I'll try to post pics of both boardsets later as well as the locations that appear to be missing caps on the Spectar little/daughterboard.

So I stayed up a little late last night doing some research. I discovered that the cap I'd blown was on the audio board and not on the mainboard. Well, I had known that it wasn't on the mainboard but I wasn't fully aware of the function of the little board stacked on the mainboard. I was tired and assumed the third board attached externally by a ribbon cable was the audio board but nope I was wrong :D.

After this happened, I remembered back to when I got my Targ cabaret and how it played but didn't have any sound. Then I remembered how we determined that the audio board wasn't connected as the wire harness plug was just dangling loose away from the audio board edge connector. Then I remembered how after plugging in the audio board the sound still didn't work because the speaker wasn't hooked up.

With this info, I busted out the Spectar boardset once more. I plugged in the boardset but left the audio board disconnected, plugged in the machine, and...Hurray! I smelled/saw no smoke or fire.

This was the result:

So... Spectar boards play! I just need to repair the audio board!

Can anyone please take me a picture of their Spectar Audio board?

That's perfectly fine. I just need it for reference purposes.

Looks like my future involves either cutting another Targ Cabaret cabinet for Spectar or buying a Spectar Cabaret off John (I think he has one for sale).

If I can move enough junk out of the way, I'll try to get some pics of my Spectar tonight.

Here you go. I hope this is good enough. I had to shrink them down enough to get them to upload. If you need the full sized, let me know and I'll try to email them to you.
