Ok ... so I finally (after purchasing the board a year ago) get around to building a Multi Williams control panel for my Robotron cabinet and hooking up the MultiWilliams boardset.

First, let me just say that this thing (JROK boardset) is awesome. If you don't have one, I highly recommend it!

On to my problem ... I wired the cabinet for Jamma and pulled a brand new JAMMA harness from my pile o' stuff. After connecting everything up, I realize that my JAMMA loom does not have a JAMMA pin in the "25 slot" and that I specifically need this input for smartbomb and player 2 flap in Joust.

So ... I pull apart an old JAMMA harness I had lying around and snag a JAMMA pin out of it to put into my new JAMMA harness in the 25 slot. Well ... it doesn't fit that well and I think I might not be getting a good connection to the Jamma board. The smartbomb button works "most of the time" but not every time and when I flap in a two player game of Joust I get one flap for every 2 or three times I hit the button.

I really do not want to buy a new JAMMA harness and have to re-wire the entire thing ... though I guess that is an option.

I guess I could solder the smartbomb wire directly to the PCB, but I am not the best solder worker on earth and I don't want to "eff up the board". Also, I don't like to have a lot of "hackery" going on in my cabinets.

Any other suggestions?

I really need to flap faster!

Thanks in advance.

Pull the wire and pin back out of the edge connector, cut the wire just above the wrong sized pin, get the right sized trifurcon pin for your edge connector, crimp it on to the wire in question, and throw the other one away?

"trifurcon pin"

So that's what those are called ... now I can google a Source.

Didn't realize they came in different sizes ... I just thought it didn't fit well because of the differences in the plastic connector itself.

I am not sure what size you need though. That's the issue. You need to figure out what size your edge connector needs. The 'trifurcon' part is just a better quality pin.

I just had the same issue ... I have no idea what size needs to go in there. Also, it appears I would need to buy a hundred or so of these pins (when I need only one).

Dumb Question Alert:

What if I simply jam something (like a broken toothpick) behind the trifurcon pin that I already weaseled into that slot to force it forward and give it a better connection to the PCB?

Hey,

Do you have the 6 pin header that ships with the board ? It has wiring for 1P button 5 & 6 on that headers, for just the case where the JAMMA harness doesn't have the pins.

See the very bottom of this page:
http://www.jrok.com/hardware/wsf/WSF_JAMMA_pinouts.html

It's just a standard 0.1" molex KK headers part # 22-01-3067 and the pins are part #08-50-0114

Also if you put the game into "muilti-wms" input mode, from the settings menu, then it follows Clay's pinout model of JAMMA 1P buttons 1 to 3 and 2P buttons 1 to 3 being used for game buttons 1 to 6.

This site has connectors 10 fo $1.....

http://arcadecontrols.com/BBBB/ds.html

My question to the group is this: Are trifurcon pins just better than the normal jamma pins??? I thought trifurcon pins (with the wings) were used for pinball header connectors only???

You might be right. Aren't edge connector pins referred to as 'split' pins? I have used the trifurcon pins before in arcade games, maybe it was for my Q*bert. I guess Gottlieb used pinball connectors even in their vids.

James,

First off ... Kudos to you on a freaking awesome product. I played Stargate last night until about 3:00 AM and loved every second of it.

Also, thanks for taking the time to respond to my question.

I do ... and it is connected. I am using two of those wires for Hyperspace and Inviso, as your webpage suggests, and both of those buttons work flawlessly. But ... I do not believe the 6 pin header is supposed to be used for 1P button 4 (which is the one my JAMMA harness happened to be missing).

Those two buttons (1P Button 5 and 1P Button 6) are working perfectly. It is 1P Button 4 that is giving me intermittent trouble. If my JAMMA harness had not been missing the pins in slot 25, I doubt I would be having this problem at all.

If I can use that 6 pin header for 1P Button 4, please let me know which wire it is and I will hook it up tonight. That will save me the trouble of further mucking around with this shoddy JAMMA harness.

Also if you put the game into "muilti-wms" input mode, from the settings menu, then it follows Clay's pinout model of JAMMA 1P buttons 1 to 3 and 2P buttons 1 to 3 being used for game buttons 1 to 6.

I tried that, but the problem isn't in the input settings. It is simply a hardware problem with this ONE pin that I jerry-rigged into my JAMMA harness not making a good connection with the PCB. Why someone sold me this JAMMA harness with pins missing is beyond me, but I guess they assume that most JAMMA games only require three buttons and, therefore, feel like its OK not to include pins and wiring for Slots 25 and 26.

AAARGH!

Thanks James.

I just ordered 20 of them from Newark.

Perhaps the new pins will clean up the issue ...

The headers used in the 'classic' wired pin type JAMMA connectors are Molex part # 08-03-0304

Here's the molex datasheet on there
http://www.molex.com/pdm_docs/sd/008030304_sd.pdf

These will fit this type of molex edge connector
http://www.molex.com/pdm_docs/sd/009506285_sd.pdf

These are not the same as Trifurcon which what should be used with with 0.156" pin header connectors, anything delivering power should absolutely be using those (!)

OHHHHH.. that's a bugg3r. PM me your address I'll shoot you out a couple of pre-wired molex pins, I've got plenty of them ;)

Trifurcon pins are these guys:

and they go with these connectors:

to plug into these headers:

What you need for the edge connector are these:

All of these are available at: http://greatplainselectronics.com/products.asp?cat=37

(A tip of the hat in thanks to Ed at GPE for allowing the stealing of his pictures).
