Reproduction Universal Joysticks

I think the black one goes under the cp. That's why the joystick spaces itself away from the cp. As with most games, the dust washer goes under the cp. The difference with Universal is the hole size combined with the short shaft is a safety hazard for knuckles without also having a dust washer on top of the cp.

I 3D printed a black one to go underneath on mine, which worked out great, paired with the clear one on top as shown in my earlier post.
Yes, I believe you're correct, seems the only one I question is Mr. Do.
An original panel never comes up for sale, and when an original game is sold I never see what looks to be an original joystick on the panel. A lot of times even a red Wico is on an otherwise original game. Just no way to know for sure if short or longer or if white washer is on top.
Seems like most all others look like below, short with the washer underneath.

Yep, exactly. The difference though is Mr. Do! is a 4 way game. The other games are 2 way which means there's no real risk of catching your knuckles in the hole with a short shafted joystick. So that could have led them to use a long shaft on Mr. Do! But that problem is also solved with a dust washer on top. The short shafts on other games was part of my decision to stick with a short shaft and I'm so happy with solving the knuckle problem with the clear dust washer. It just looks so good and plays so well.

What seems like the most logical explanation to me for why other games always seem to have the original joysticks and Mr. Do! doesn't is that they used long shafts on Mr. Do! and people didn't like the long throw so ops changed them.

On another thought, I just think it's a bit crazy that on Arcadeshop you can find an all metal full scale Monroe replica (a much better stick) for $59 bucks but anyone who's tried to make this Universal stick, it has so much controversy and it can't be done for less than hundreds and hundreds of dollars? And would be asking even more once actually produced? Not knocking the effort and I know people are trying make a living but just questioning it and maybe I'll contact Steven and ask who made those Monroe's because that's probably the right shop to make these too.

FWIW, the Monroe sticks are super simple metal cuts/bends in comparison.

Parts list for the Universal:
Ball (black)
Pivot Ball (CNC) 304SS
Joint Pass Through (CNC) 304SS
Joint Threaded (CNC) 304SS
Shaft (CNC) 304SS
(4) Standoff (CNC) 304SS
Bottom wThreads (CNC) 304SS
Large Washer (CNC) 304SS
(2) Small Washer (CNC) 304SS
Top 2Way wThreads (CNC) 304SS or
Top 4Way wThreads (CNC) 304SS or
Top 8Way wThreads (CNC) 304SS
(3) Machine Screw
(8) Split Washer
(8) Nut
(8) Small Machine Screw
(4) Leaf Switch
(2) E-Clips

I may be forgetting something, but that's the gist.

What is it going to take for us to get this done? Several have worked on it now for what seems to be 5 years off and on, but nothing has been finished. Kudos for the hard work but we still have nothing:( We need this stick made for$ 199- $250, much above that is a waste of time. @mneubey was going to make these but laid off as others said they were close to being done. Should we tackle this as a group? How can we as a group not get this done? Thoughts, ideas, anyone want to take it on? @mneubey you want it?

Mark

These panels have been the best part of this thread!

This is a great point. It would be interesting to see if whoever made those Monroes (and they did a fantastic job) could also make the Universal's.

Frankly even though it's not "correct" I'd much rather have a clear dust washer because the white one would hide all the nice artwork around the hole. But to each their own.

This is a nice idea. There should be more clear dust washers about. Might just make a few myself :)

Now you're just showing off, lol

Mark, the closest two people to making this happen are Travis and Jeremy. Both are banned here. Travis you know how to get ahold of, and Jeremy's email is in your PMs now … in March of 2022 he was 1 week away from announcing the stick at $240 plus shipping. Not sure why he never launched it. I'm assuming he was basically finished. He definitely knows and has the right info you can bank on that.

who is "Travis", is this RAM Controls?

Yep its ram controls. He is selling stolen products and folks keep buying. Just look at what he did to the guys with the atari logo stick tops and battlezone halves. Forget about him.

Well then Jeremy is your next best hope. He's probably in the top 5 arcade collectors in Michigan. He just hates KLOV with the passion of 1000 suns. But email him and see.

I'm currently in the process of repoing the Galaga and Defender joysticks, and just recently bought a couple of Universal cabs without the original joysticks, and as such was interested in this thread, so may just look into doing that one at the same time. I've asked @TSB if he would be willing to share the 3D files and I can look at what's needed. Not promising anything, but we'll see.

Aren't the galaga and defender both already made by several vendors?

Yeah, there are a few, but not always readily available.

I do like to try my hand at making as much as I can, so if I need something in the future and can't find it, I've already got the know how down.

I'm even doing the short leaf buttons myself, and know you can pick these up all over the place, but still, if I need a particular colour and can't find one, I always have that option open to me :)

Nothing like a little learning.

Where can I find a sample to take to the machine shop across the street from my arcade. The guys are super nice and make parts for BMW. I'll bet they can make it.

Got this joystick sent to me today and wonder if anyone has seen it before?]
Looks very similar to the Universal stick but not sure. Maybe a European variety.
You can see the restrictor gate on the top.

A member on here sent me a version of the Universal Joystick they had, and I've compared the above joystick to theirs.

Everything is exactly the same apart from the top plate. Theirs has the diamond cutout, but mine has a large round hole to allow a restrictor to be screwed into place, so it can be a 2/4/8 way. Also seen ones with a spring around the shaft and nuts holding the top plate on as apposed to these that are welded. The versions with nuts also seem to have hex pillars whereas these have round ones.

Anyone know what versions came with what machines?
