Reproduction of Williams 1942 (Lic'd from Capcom) conversion kit artwork

Background Notes:

In 2009 i started making enquiries about the game, initially as i noticed an advert for a PCB that there was Williams branded/licensed 1942 PCB. As i was already obsessed about early '80s Williams arcade games, this grabbed my atttention so i posted a question KLOV. (add link)

I continued research via the internet, klov and other arcade related forums. that is not to say that i have done an exhaustive search.

Posts by klovers provided tantalysing glimpses of further info. (add links). Recently, 7146aaron posted to say he was about to restore a cab and was doing research before doing so, & kindly offered to sell me the marquee, pcbs & the art if he could successfully peel them off the cab.

After much contemplation, we realised that aaron had a good chunk of the control panel overlay artwork!

Zabadozer posted a message that he had recently acquired a 1942 conversion cab & included a pics of his CP which looked like the 1942 conversion kit cpo. after revewing various pics found to date of conversion cabs [note - check with cnlmoore ], & after further reviewing old promo material available on www.retrokade.com , incl:
- a very grainy/low res newsprint article about the conversion kit (call this CPO pic #1, www.retrokade.com website), and
- an image of a converted cab with the CPO artwork applied (call this CPO pic #2, www.retrokade.com website)(better check
this factoid about the locations of the pics and include links to the pics) i came to the following realisations:
1. 7146aaron had an excellent example of the sideart and was willing to remove it so i could scan it. Artwork received today! Whoo Hoo!
The side artwork is the exactly the same on both sides and is not mirrored. I will scan the Side artwork.
2. 7146aaron had an excellent example (an est 40% thereof)of the CPO art & ditto so i could scan it. Artwork received too!
According to the promo material on the Retrokade website, this piece of the artwork is the topside of the CPO where the buttons & joystick should be mounted (if artwork is applied in accordance with promo material)
Andykmv will scan the Bezel/CPO artwork (top part).
3. According to CPO pic #1 (separate to the promo article pic) on the Retrokade website, CPO pic #2 artwork
has been installed upside down.
(check if the site quoted is correct and incl links)
4. Zabadozer (game now owned by TheShanMan) had an excellent example of another significant chunk of the CPO artwork:
4.01 on the basis of CPO pic #1 & CPO pic #2, and of zabadozers CPO picture (call this CPO pic #3) zabadozers CPO
has also been installed upside down.
4.02 the CPO represents approx 50% of the remaining area of the CPO needed to complete the artwork
4.03 parts of the needed area of the CPO approx 5% are obscured by (hopefully removeable) button and joystick labels
4.04 parts of the needed area of the cpo approx 3% have been damaged (on the exposed edge of the CPO)
4.05 the fire button label is intact and able to be scanned in
4.06 the loop button label is intact and able to be scanned in
4.07 the 1 player start button label is intact and able to be scanned in
4.08 the 2 player start button label is intact and able to be scanned in
4.09 the joystick label is intact and able to be scanned in
4.10 the Instruction Card is intact and can be scanned in
TheShanMan has offered to scan the remaining CPO artwork and the Marquee artwork.
5. Zabadozer (game now owned by TheShanMan) has an excellent example of the Williams 1942 Marquee which can be scanned.
TheShanMan has offered to scan the Marquee artwork.
6. Approx 2% of the available cpo artwork is either damaged or missing for which no original artwork samples have been
discovered to date. There are a lot of VAPS members (to be quantified) (and presumeably also KLOV members) that have
dedicated 1942 "conversions" which could be Capcom, Romstar or Williams (more discovery needed to identify candidate williams
artwork).

Sources of Information:

1. The "Williams 1942 Instruction Manual 16-3030-101 (Mar_1_1985), for information about what was supplied with the
conversion kit, as detailed on Page 6 (the list of parts) and page 4 (the "Decal Locations" diagram).

2. klov members - via Threads posted on the www.klov.com forums in 2009/2010.

3. other internet sites incl www.retrokade.com

4. Artwork Scans: http://vectorlib2.free.fr/1942_bezel/1942_bezel.html

Current activity:

Efforts are now underway to collect sufficient samples or photos or scans of the Williams 1942 (Licensed from Capcom) artwork
as supplied with the Williams 1942 (Licensed from Capcom) conversion kit ("the conversion kit") to enable reconstruction of what the artwork looked like, also with a view to reproducing the artwork.

I recently purchased from 7146aaron two items of original Williams 1942 conversion kit artwork (side art x 1 piece), bezel artwork x 1 piece, marquee (capcom/romstar) and pcb set (capcom) with harness.

And recently Zabadozer acquired a Williams 1942 conversion cab, then sold it to TheShanMan.

1. Reproducing the Bezel artwork.
This consists of three parts:
2 x CRT Decal (Part No 31-1343-3030)
1 x Instruction Card (Part No 16-3030-1)

1.1 CRT Decal (Part No 31-1343-3030)
Source of original Bezel artwork: KLOV member 7146aaron.
Half of the bezel artwork was found on 7146aaron's 1942 conversion cab, and was stuck to the kick panel underneath the coin
door. aaron was successfully able to remove the artwork intact and is in excellent condition and perfect for scanning
artwork for both the bezel reproduction and the cpo reproduction. After some review of the materials available, it was
realised that the CRT Decals are mirror images of each other (not including the Instruction Card). Therefore the half of the
CRT Decal set in hand is sufficient to reproduce the two CRT Decal parts required.

1.2 1 x Instruction Card (Part No 16-3030-1)
Source of the Instruction Card artwork: KLOV member TheShanMan.
The Instruction Card artwork is either part of the CPO on his conversion cab, or, adhered over the top of the CPO.
TheShanMan has offered to scan the CPO so this item can be reproduced from the CPO scans.

2. Reproducing the Side artwork.
This consists of two parts:
2 x Side Decal (Part No 31-1344-3030)

2.1 Reproducing the left hand side Side Decal.
Source of original Side artwork: KLOV member 7146aaron.
The Side artwork was located on 7146aaron's 1942 conversion cab. aaron was successfully able to remove the artwork intact
and is in excellent condition and perfect for scanning for the Side artwork reproduction.
A KLOV member has offered to vectorise the artwork so i will followup as soon as artwork is scanned.

2.2 Reproducing the right hand side Side Decal.
Same as 2.1 above. The Side Decals are exactly the same on both sides of the cab, NOT mirror images of each other.
Therefore the single piece of Side artwork received from aaron is sufficient to reproduce the two Side Decals required.

3. Reproducing the Control Panel artwork.
This consists of two parts:
1 x Control Panel overlay (Part No 31-1341-3030) - need to identify thickness of material and type of finish.
1 x Miscellaneous control-panel decals (part no 31-1348-3030)

3.1 Reproducing the control-panel overlay.
Source of the control-panel overlay artwork:
- Top part - KLOV member 7146aaron
- Bottom part - KLOV member TheShanMan.
- missing sections (from the aforementioned sources due to wear and tear, buttons/js installation or other damage) - source
needed - parts missing to be identified, but only approx 2%-5% at most of overall artwork.
I have been researching the reconstruction of the CPO from the samples of art from aaron and shanman and most of the art is there, although some hjas been obscured by button and js stick on labels.
A reasonable simile has been assembled of the CPO in lieu of actual scans to work with to date.. this will change shortly.

3.2 Reproducing the Miscellaneous control-panel decals (part no 31-1348-3030)
Source of the Marquee Decal artwork: KLOV member TheShanMan.
the shanman CPO contains all of the button and JS label/surround artwork.
A fellow KLOV memer has offered to vectorise the artwork so i will followup as soon as artwork is scanned.

4. Reproducing the Marquee artwork.
This consists of two parts:
1 x Marquee Decal (Part No 31-1342-3030)
1 x "Survival" Decal. no part# given. could be the "Declare War" decal referred to in manual. no info on what it looks like.

4.1 Reproducing the Marquee (Decal).
Source of the Marquee Decal artwork: KLOV member TheShanMan.
TheShanMan has offered to scan the Marquee whcih would be fantastic, as i havent seen a good source of that art (dont have
one myself).

4.2 Reproducing the "Survival" Decal.
A source for this decal is needed.

5. Reproducing the other artwork items:
5.1 "Declare War" decal (part no 31-1346-3030) - need a source for this artwork
(attached to folded sign to sit on top of game).
5.2 "FCC" decal as applied to cab mains cable entry point. (no part no supplied) - need a source for this artwork.
5.3 "Survival" decal as applied to the pcb cage. (no part no supplied) - need a source for this artwork.

That's all for now!:D

I'm excited about this effort! I think if possible I'd like to transfer all of my 1942 stuff to a Williams cab (currently in a pacman cab) and of course I wouldn't want to do that without repro artwork.

Two questions for you: Do you care if I scan the cpo and button/joystick decals together or separate? If you've already got the part of the cpo that's obscured by the decals from 7146aaron's cpo then I'd rather not peel these off. But if you're missing the artwork underneath then I will peel them off. Also, do you intend to treat the cpo and button/joystick stickers as distinct items for reproduction or will you just include the sticker graphics on the cpo so everything is reproduced as a single cpo sticker? I think the latter might be nice because then plexiglass wouldn't be necessary for protecting the button/joystick stickers. But I don't know why Williams created separate stickers to begin with so maybe there's a good reason to keep them separate???

The Joystick & Button stickers are shown in the PDF of the 1942 Manual. Since the PDF was scanned as black and white, any color information has been lost. Presumably the 1942 manual that Andy just bought off EBay is complete, hopefully the reproduction of the stickers in the original manual are in color and can be reproduced from those.

Ken, not to worry. I've got the stickers in good condition on mine. It's just a matter of whether he wants me to peel them off to get a more complete scan of the cpo.

if you can fit any of them together in the scan window then do so - i can split out the individual labels, otherwise, maybe do scans in a nice hires colour scan as follows:
1. Instruction Card as one scan zoomed in (do this one specifically)
2. Fire & Loop buttons another scan (pic the best pair, or scan both pairs as sep scans)
3. P1 & P2 as a sep scan
4. JS label as a sep scan

main thing is to setup the CPO square on to the scanner so we get sharp edges in the horizontal/vert lines.

???

dont have to do that that yet. (peel them off that is) i need to poll vaps members that have 1942 conversion dedicated cabs to see if anyone else has the williams cpo artwork we can photograph to fill in the missing sections.

maybe we should repro the labels first and when you are happy with the results of that repro work should be confident to remove the existing labels knowing you have a replacement set!

do you have a digital micrometer ? we should guage the thickness of the label material and identify the type of material used for reprinting.
.
But I don't know why Williams created separate stickers to begin with so maybe there's a good reason to keep them separate???

as this is a conversion kit, and could be re-applied to existing conversion cabs, then logically dif CPs types out there would have buttons and js in diff spots relative to the artwork, so maybe should we keep them as seperate stickons ?

if the artwork is freely available for anyone to print through someone like thisoldgame then they could choose to combine the stickons with the cpo to suit their own needs too, and/or resize the art to suit their cp.

so for the purpose of this exercise i'd say lets keep them as sep stickons.
- maybe the labels could go on a seperate layer in the drawing file than can be turned on/off as needed, or seperately printed as needed ?

Suggestions:
-for a williams wooden cp conversion maybe we could do a fixed cpo with the labels embedded. its only the non-williams that need diff placement of buttons/js and labels.
- cpo sizing also needs to be considered (ie width) to suit diff williams donor cabs. i am leaning toward some custom outer drawing elements on the cpo beyond the known drawing elements for the wider wooden cps.

OK, I will scan cpo, button/joystick stickers, and instruction sticker all together (without removing). However, it won't be a single scan. Due to the width of the panel I think it'll end up being 2 scans for the top and 2 for the front. They'll just need to be stitched back together. I think if I bring it in to scan at my work I can get a consistently squared image (my home scanner's bezel is not flat).

P.S. Like my new avatar? :D

good idea!

could stick u something around or next to the cp during scanning to provide some registration marks ? will help to stitch back together - maybe a metal ruler with 1/32" or 1/64" subdivisions, inches or mm i dont care. also do a bit of an overlap if u can.

could you do an accurate measurement of length from the bottom edge of the cpo front to the back edge of the cpo top ? that will allow me to properly setup/stitch the upper/lower parts with the damaged area in between.

also pls measure L-R between two clearly identifiable marks on the CPO so i can guage scale when i size it ? a ruler may be enough (see above)

PS jealousy is running rampant in my haousehold today! :D:eek:

i think i'll also do the scan at work first as the photocopier is a3 sized.
it is possible each item may fit full size! damn forgot to bring em with me. which means i'll do em at home first

just finished scan of the Bezel Decal sample in two parts as follows:
1. Grayscale scan, LHS and RHS, at 600dpi, Bitmap format
2. Colour Photo scan, LHS and RHS, at 600dpi, Bitmap format

The scans are rather large (48mb each). Where is a good place to upload these to share them ?

should have Bezel decal scans uploaded sometime tonight after which i will post the location where they can be downloaded from (courtesy of Zorg!)if anyone is interested!

So Andy, is Reava scanning everything? If he's got perfect artwork that is easily scannable then it probably doesn't make sense for me to bother. So I'm unclear as to whether or not I need to do anything at this point.

Please still proceed with scanning!

Reava had offered to vector the scanned side art (next on my list), but otherwise did not want to remove the mask from the artwork until there was a cpo to attach them to. See his post here for clarification: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showpost.php?p=1185625&postcount=4
Otherwise awaiting reava's list of items and/or pics per his previous post!

I have made a start and just need to finalise uploading those scans to the site Zorg offered to make those available. i could email them to you if you would like, 4 x 48mb BMP files unzipped.

EDIT: just double checked and they did go up to http://picasaweb.google.com.au/andykmv/1942?feat=directlink but at lower res (i think they got downscaled during upload somehow???)

EDIT 2: forgot to mention that reava was loking for a cpo so i dont think he has one to scan. reava, pls correct me if my assumption is wrong!

I can host the scan check pm

files uploading now. upload is of 4 images (bitmap files) - First two are two halves of the image scanned in Greyscale 600dpi, and Second two are two halves of the image scanned as a Colour photo 600dpi.

Although the scans represent one half of the bezel decal set, the two halves are mirror images of each other and therefore sufficient to recreate the Bezel decal set.

The following files have been uploaded and should be available soon:
  1. Williams_1942_Sideart_raw_scan_1st_shot_300dpi_colour_part_01.jpg size is 3460.2 Kbytes
  2. Williams_1942_Sideart_raw_scan_1st_shot_300dpi_colour_part_02.jpg size is 2889.6 Kbytes
I didnt have the option of bitmap format on the scanner/copier i used. Thanks again to 7146aaron for the original artwork! these scans were only at 300 dpi so will have to rescan in smaller chunks at 600dpi colour and upload again as the scanner/copier did not have enough local storage capacity.

and should be available at this link: http://vectorlib2.free.fr/1942_bezel/1942_bezel.html soon! and many thanks to Eric (Zorg) for hosting the files!

i got most of these unapplied... ill get a snapshot tomorrow of what i have

Reava,

if you still have time to have a crack at vectoring the Sideart decals, have a look at the side art decal scans and let me know what dpi and file format you want them in. see notes above for location of the files for downloading, or pm your email addy if you want me to send you the higher res files more directly.

Many thanks!
