Reproduction Ghosts N Goblins Cabinet

CNC Plans are coming along. I am working on the monitor framing area today and confirming angles. I have the cabinet pretty much completely CAD out besides the monitor area which ill finish up today. I can confirm the noted by @kidrivers the laminate above is a near perfect match to the cabinet. Pictures provided.

Are you going to be building these out of MDF as the originals were? Or standard particleboard? There is a difference. And what I've noted over the years is that laminate has a much tougher time sticking to MDF then particleboard. It'll work initially, but MDF is more flexible than particleboard. Over time, sometimes the contact cement bond will break and it's easier for the laminate to pull back and get broken or chipped off. This happened to me on a couple of Rockola cabinets I laminated which are also made from MDF.

What would you suggest? I personally like doing all my own builds out of melaply which is already black/black plywood (same stuff stern uses for their pinball machines, or same stuff you see on the front of a MK2 Midway cabinet (kick area). I've also been wanting to try to the mdf plycore stuff which has super smooth exterier panels with a plywood core. If I was looking to save cost obviously black melamine particle board would be the EZ goto with a strong maple base, and plywood for anything holding up the monitor.

Ideally, it would be particleboard with one side coated in black melamine, the other bare. That way you can apply the laminate to the unfinished side and the inside will already be black without having to paint it or apply additional vinyl.

This will be somewhat a work in progress/forum for me to keep a progress log of reproducing the GnG Cabinet. I picked up a cabinet recently from @chips4sle which was in overall great condition! I already found an original marquee, PCB, Wiring harness. I see this cabinet being so desirable might as well reproduce it. (PS. Still looking for an original bezel for my G&G Cabinet!)

I've already repro'd a few cabinets already including Punchout/PC10 2 Screen, Journey, 720, Ice Cold Beer, Track N Field, NBA Jam, Rootbeer Tapper/Timber, HS5/Moonwalker. GnG Cabinet is kind of interesting as its dado'd together in a way I havent seen many other arcade cabinets. Most of the cabinet design uses cleats and/or rabbet joints but this one is full dado joints for the front, base, back cleats while the top and back pieces of the cabinet is just cleated in place.

I've already started the plans for my build and will progress through the cad files here. I have the basics completed including the general outline of the cabinet, the front, top, top back pieces and wood bezel.

Any plans for a control panel run?

This is a great project. I believe the cabinet is the same for Ghouls n ghosts, correct?
What will be the options for getting a cabinet? Will the CAD files be available? Purchase a cabinet in pieces - flat shipped, or assembled? I have the PCB and the artwork for Ghouls n Ghosts and have been waiting for a cabinet option for years. Thanks.

Ghouls n ghosts is in a Dynamo cabinet although nobody has been able to confirm whether that is a Dynamo HS-1 or HS-2.

The ghosts-n-goblins cabinet is one of a kind. No other game came in that cabinet. The ghouls-n-ghosts cabinet is the hs-1 with the 3 slot speaker grills, although there are reported originals in the hs-1 with the 5-slot speaker grills as well. I have personally seen an all original Ghouls, with the purchase reciept, and it was in the hs-1 with the 3-slot speaker grill.

My favorite thing was when Fizzy G actually put a dedicated ghost and goblins in a Ghouls n Ghosts dynamo cabinet thinking it was the correct one. Mr. fake perfection got it wrong.

Ha, I remember that. But I have seen alot of those "conversions" because the original goblins cab is so hard to find.

I have all the major cad work done, I am starting the 3d rendering process to confirm everything fits as it should prior to cutting/assembly. As you can see the back dado is just a large cleat to catch the door and the upper/lower panel. All dado positions are .25" deep. I also like to cut .015" into the panels anywhere which a piece of cleat or panel that gets glued into the panel prior to assembly so its a perfect lineup everytime.

I believe @Dr BB is working on that, if not I will see about doing a run of control panels.
Yep - So I have an original CP at a metal place who are going to do a run of 10. Today they said it'll take 5-6 weeks and I'll get a chance to fit the first prototype to my cabinet to check it before they do the proper run.
I genuinely won't be looking to profit from this run but do hope to recuperate some of the costs of the place producing the units and making a file of all the measurements etc. Fingers crossed it all works out.

Yeah, when you figure it out, let me know the cost, I'm in for one.

I've owned an original. Authenticity demands MDF, which is what the original is. The downside is that the cab is incredibly HEAVY for a 19" cab. Like I mostly own 25" cabs and it's easily as heavy as any MK2 etc.

That being said, this is a replica, so it's not original, so Phet's idea of using melamine would probably be a good compromise of weight vs originality. In this case, the black melamine side in and the bare side out so you can apply the blue laminate. This would be probably be the best of both worlds.

Yea, I don't think I would ever go the MDF route unless someone was truely and absolutely persistent on that level of authenticity.
