Reproduction Atari Boards from Original Films

The original PP board design was crap, so a repro would be a repro of crap. I suppose there will always be some board designs that aren't worth revisiting (and questionably worth fixing).

But made with better parts one would hope. I am on my third or fourth replacement board and I'm getting weary.

Cool, when can we expect the completion date? If one tried to pinpoint a date by looking at his custom chip code cracking checklist, it looks like we'll see it in about 2082. Just in time for PP's Centennial Celebration!! Seriously, put me on the list for two of these Adam.

i have always said a drop in pp replacement would sell

Scott,

Big under taking for sure. My vote is to get the RARE pieces done and forget about the readily available pieces.

Marble Madness 2 anyone?

The films I have are only from the 70's through the early 80's. They finally went 'digital' at that time, and stopped using the films. I think the latest stuff I saw in the stash, was some System II stuff.

Oh! That's nice-
Now you COULD make some TTL version System I daughterboards. I think those all use standard parts except for the Slapstik. They're a little smaller in size too.

Or trakball boards-
or interconnect boards
or the little Pokey replacement cards

I'm just thinking of things that are smaller than a bus.

Yeah life took over for a while and I had to put this project on hold. Finishing up the lab this month though and then I'll be back on this project.

If JROK is willing to share his customs the process will go even faster.

I applaud the thought of repro-ing boards off the original films, but I honestly don't see anyway this could be done at the price point you mentioned. That many square inches is simply going to cost a lot.

If you're willing to depart from the originals in some areas to accept modern chips, why not go all the way and lay out the TTL in a Xilinix and shrink the board down to just a few square inches?

In the end, the idea of reproducing boards might be more viable in another 20 years when there isn't a competing supply of $125 dollar originals on eBay.
