Replay Magazine May 1987 Top Game Charts

The industry sections were always filled with lots of juicy drama for the era. When I was doing research on the legality of parallels/import titles I came across an absolute trove of drama from over the years.

This one is a 1994 flashback to 1987 detailing how AMOA president Dick Hawkins warehouse was raided by the feds. Both the AMOA and AMAA were actively involved in ratting out operators and resellers of bootlegs and parallel import titles. Both organizations even hired former FBI officials to help in enforcement. The AMOA blamed the rival AMAA for the Hawkins raid. Hawkins claimed he bought-out a rival operator and did not yet take the time to check all of the games. Hawkins would immediately step down. The AMOA would tone their rhetoric down about parallels for a short time and then later double-down on their bootleg parallels enforcement until a bill was passed some years later.
