I'm restoring my SW-UR. I've got the old marquee overlay off... this thing is wrapped around a particle board frame and stuck to the glass panel...

Any suggestions on how...

#1 to get the adhesive off of the particle board frame? I'm apprehensive about using goo gone or a solvent that will be absorbed into the wood and get it all funk'd up.

#2 to apply the new overlay? I'm thinking stick it to the glass first then wrap the top and bottom flaps around...

any suggestions/experience would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Star Wars was a pain in the ass to replace the marquee for me. Same with Tempest. The genius at Atari who came up with the idea of a marquee OVERLAY needs to be pummeled repeatedly for a very long time. I cleaned the adhesive off the glass and then tried to sand the wood but failed miserably. I eventually just said screw it and applied the overlay. I did exactly what you suggest...I applied the glass to the overlay then set it in the frame and continued with the application.

After all was said and done, when I went to mount the damn thing I DROPPED IT and it banged against my yoke causing a 1/3" gash in the bottom edge... oh how I was pissed at that...

I repeat...whoever came up with the concept of the Atari marquee OVERLAY... may you catch herpes you bastard!

best thing to do is avoid the application techniques of the above poster.

Remove the overlay, however you must
Sand it down, I used an electric hand sander, its pretty much the only way youll get the adhesive off properly.
The glass should fit in its slot nicely, but there is some of that puffy sealant tape stuff that should go in there, so that the glass isnt directly in contact with the wood.
Before application, since youve sanded, take some black spray paint to it, a few nice coats so that there isnt any wood color showing.
Not sure if this overlay is like a Millipede one, but the top part of it wraps around the back of the marquee bracket, then stapled down on the underside.
Start to lay it in place on the middle of the front, and work it to the top and bottom edges, then staple the back side down. (if thats how it was originally)

I actually stuck a portion of it to the by mistake. It stuck fast, and despite trying to carefully peel it off, a big portion of the coloring right on the "STAR WARS" logo came off, leaving a huge hole in the middle. So yes...I bought 2 overlays, and was much more careful with the 2nd.

Couldn't have said it better myself... after I took it apart Iwas like WTF??

Thanks for the tip brotherhay... I actually started sanding it with a detail sander last night... its going to take a few sheets of paper... gums up pretty quick!

Thanks to all for your stories... I had a feeling this was one of those infamous things that is not talked about too much ;)

Going from side to side like that I would be worried that the overlay would go on crooked. I know you said you taped it down, but where? Can you explain that a bit more? The pics are terrific. Thanks!

Just taped the edge of it to the wood frame. Did my tempest this way too. You can see it on photo #8

Is that an overlay from Arcadeshop? Is it opaque in the black areas when lit?

I'm pretty sure I got it from Arcade shop, and yes it is opaque in the glass area. You need to align the black so as not to get light through it. I held mine up to a window to see where the light would come through to get the placement I wanted.

guess I should have included finished pictures with it lit up.. Opps. They are added now, but I'll insert them as well.

Talon2000.... You said you got it from the Arcade shop but I was told that they had one with no copy rights on it and the size was a bit off.... Your overlay looks great are you sure you got it from the Aracdeshop?
