Hi,

I am fairly new to fixing up arcade games and have been doing good things with electrical and wiring items... but monitor bugs continue to be painful!!!

I have seen some information about using a regular tv or pc monitor in an arcade using a cga/vga converter.

These games are for my home use and no plans on getting rid of them in the near future.

Anyone convert - if so any pro/cons and suggestions?

Thanks,
Chris

You can do this, if you do be sure to use a CRT instead of an LCD. The only downside is that it will be very difficult for you to find a computer monitor that's the same size as the VGA one you are replacing, assuming you're replacing a 25" POLO.

I've used a CGA to VGA card in my test rig before. It works fine.

I used a high rez lcd 19" in place of a crt monitor and like the results. I did set the screen back into the cab a little farther to get more depth.

Thanks,
What brand and model did you use?

I keep looking at acer and samsung....

Thanks,
Chris

Ok- so I wanted to try this out too since CRTs are getting harder to come by and will be more so in the future. So I did this in one of my jamma cabs with an 19" LCD and I did not like the results at all. The old games were designed for the old scanline rich CRT displays, not LCDs, so they tend to look blocky and blurry. Motion was not fun to stare at either, i ended up putting it in a capcom bowling cabinet in the end after moving it around, that was the best result (and even now im yanking it out), action games were not fun. The resolution is technically being scaled up to 640x480 or higher which just looks yucky to me.

This could be a lot to do with the fact that lots of these CGA->VGA boards are cheap chinese junk. You might get better results with a real professional scaler but by then, may as well buy a new CRT!
