I have a lot of 19" classics, with CRTs. I have not tried any LCD upgrades, will any of the ones that say CGA work? I have a Spy Hunter, Rampage, Stargate, and Gauntlet II I am considering upgrading. I think Gauntlet II would look weird with a flat monitor though...

Any suggestions or horror stories for me to avoid?

Thanks!
Phil

It's an interesting question given the issues with CRT and the lack on new ones being manufactured. Yes there are some who will say its not original and therefore bad but for those looking for a reliable option, LCD are inexpensive.

An LCD is not an upgrade. I don't know why so many people insist on wrecking their cabs by installing unsuitable monitors in them, this is supposed to be a preservation society.

LCDs are good cheap replacments for multigames you don't care about. I have tested a few and stuck one in my DK cab with a metal frame bolted to the original frame. Its an older NEC 4:3 and it actually looks very good connected to an ArcadeSD PCB as it is in the original position and far enough back to not be obvious. I have tried newer units and I though they looked horrible. The only reason it is still in the DK cab is I don't want to shell out the cash for a rebuilt Sanyo or spend time transferring a regular monitor to a Sanyo junk frame.

Do what you may as it is your game. There are cheap rebuilt monitors on EBAY and a few others sell them here. Get something with no screen burn, a rebuilt or replacment chassis as the LCD will only be a bit cheaper.

Horror story is putting a LCD into a classic arcade cabinet. Spend the time here learning how to repair those old CRTs, or find a local who can do the work for you. These old games look good because of the phosphor glow these old CRTs give off, and you will totally lose that on a LCD.

LCD is great for modern, high res graphics, but totally wrecks old, low res work. The best thing you could do is try and find some local to you and look at them in person & see the difference. As Hewitson said, it is NOT an "upgrade".

Ok my neo geo's crt was trashed and I mean trashed. The tube was messed up(one side brighter than the other) and the board needed a full cap kit including the horizontal caps/coil. I bought one of the arcade lcds from Happs(got it from twisted quarter).

I did buy the retro shelf fix kit for mine. Since the neo geo mounts the screen from the top and bottom instead of the sides it wouldn't work. I ended up taking the mounting tabs that were on the sides of the screen and putting them on the top and bottom(it had holes) and making a bracket.

As far as me "wrecking" my cab 4 screws and the bracket will come out with the lcd attached and the thing is back to stock. I also think that keeping a game running does fall in line with a preservation society.

Anyway I think the vision pro looks killer in my neo geo. If I did it again I would prob just buy the nos crt if it is an option as it was around the same price and I wouldn't have had to make a frame. Even then though depending you might need to modify the bezel depending if the new crt is a flat crt or not. I have a newer vga 25 inch crt in my naomi cabinet(pretty sure it was nos when I got it last year) were the cabinet had a cga monitor in it. The flat crt didn't quite work with the old bezel. I will say if I did that again I'd prob through an lcd tv in it but the naomi was built to handle vga.
