I have heard you can replace black and white monitors with a TV set. A quick search didn't reveal any instructions. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

42 views, no help. =)

Figured it out on my own.

Both black and white monitors I had, had a molex plug going to them carrying 5 wires. 3 of those wires were power (they clearly lead off to the side towards the transformer). The other two are video and clearly lead onto the monitor chassis.

Strip an RCA jack and hook it up to the two video wires and plug it into the tv, it is just that simple. If it doesn't come up then reverse the two wires and then it will.

Hopefully anyone searching this in the future will find this thread.

Just saw this. Yes, grabbing Video-out and Ground from the harness should do it. What happened to the original monitors? They were probably fixable.

BTW, is the screen shot from Exidy Circus? Looks kind of funny....

The screen shot is Midway Clowns, looks perfect in person.

The original monitor in the machine is doing a very weird thing where only an 8" circular area is showing a PERFECT picture and any adjustments just adjust the picture within that 8" viewable window, never changing the size of the window, only the size of what is in it. It is like someone cut an 8" hole in a piece of cardboard and put that over the screen.

For some reason I strongly suspect the tube and was going to wait until I got another 23" B&W monitor in my possession so I could see if the problem belonged to the tube or chassis. The original monitor has heavy burn in anyway, so I may permanently install the TV setup in this one and save the monitor for something else once I repair it.

Midway Clowns. Aha. That explains it. I run an Exidy house over here. :)

So the original is like you're looking through a peephole? Hmm. I think I read what causes that once. But I don't remember. What type of monitor is it? I might have one you could test with. Of course I'm all the way over in Higginsville, so....

Oh god does this look and play well. I grabbed 2 different thrift store TV sets, a 19" and a 25" and they both look perfect. I am certainly going to repair the original monitor eventually, but I can't think of a good reason to actually use it. The original game used a 23" with a plain black cardboard bezel. Either 19" or 25" should work fine. I couldn't find anything 23" other than late model flat tube stuff.

Are you using the video wire with the yellow jack or the coaxial cable? People keep saying RCA wire but pictures make it look like coaxial cable...

Also, results may vary from one set to the next. I tried two different tv sets with my clowns. Both showed the picture, however one was bright white and dark blacks and the other was more like two shades of gray.

.... and this was the problem. Thank you. Noticed it as I went to take the original monitor out.

Hmmm--

Maybe the yoke slid back a bit? That could cause the smaller picture.

Works great!

Now if I can figure out how to hook it up to TV Hockey.. That thing causes me tons of trouble and It's got some kind of card game burn on it.

Wow! But the picture is all stretched out. I have to open it and see what can be adjusted!

If you crack it open you ought to be able to adjust the height down. If not keep trying sets until you find one that works!

excellent- I hit a winner every now and then!

I'm probably going to resort to the modern TV solution for my Space Invaders. I've lost interest in working on the BW chassis.

I just wish that suggestion would have popped up in my original thread asking about the problem, because now I am sitting on two tvs I wouldn't have purchased otherwise.
