Replacement Tapper Controls

Similar, but different, question.

Does anyone know where to buy the thick, heavy replacement spring steel used in the riginal Tapper joysticks?

One of our sticks broke at SFGE last year from extreme play and we have been struggling to find the right gauge of steel ever since. I ordered some from Mylstar a while back and it looks right, but it is not even close to being as stiff as the original piece of spring steel in the game.

Thanks in advance.

The handle itself might be *okay*... you can see the ridges from the 3D print, so it probably won't feel 100% correct, but with the decal on it, maybe it'd be fine. I REALLY doubt the whole joystick will feel anything like the original if you use it on "industry standard joysticks (e.g. Sanwa, Zippy)" as intended... but if that's the last piece you need to get your Tapper going, for $20 it'd probably hold you over until you get the right ones.

Do you still have the original piece? Mine did the same a couple years ago, and I was able to reuse it, since it was originally longer than it needed to be. IIRC, I just drilled a hole farther up for the top screw, and made a small notch to butt against the bottom screw to keep it from rotating sideways. It's been working fine since the repair.

If you're referring to the tap handles, just grab an original Galaga joystick or other 2-way joystick - same internals.

Tapper joystick bases are unique to Tapper. They are not the same as Galaga or Galaxian.
The shaft hole is not as elongated on Tapper compared to Galaga/Galaxian

This is true. There are a lot of Bally/Midway 2-way sticks used on different games, and they all have the same basic design, but many are slightly different.

I ran into something similar when restoring the 2-way shifter sticks on my Demolition Derby, which are also Bally 2-ways, however I'm not sure if they're the same as Tapper.

It would be nice if we had one thread with measurements and pics for the different types, to help folks identify them. I even have a few spare 2-ways that I got in stick lots, and I'm not 100% sure what they go to.

I've had no response from the seller. Can't complete checkout on the website. Can only purchase 1 tap at a time. Doesn't ship within the USA or internationally.

Bit of a dead loss as far as I can tell.

Additionally I've been trying to find a single tap for sale somewhere that I can do a casting of to replicate. No luck. If anyone has a single I could borrow I can send it back with a replica!

I had the exact same experience with my Tapper cocktail at SFGE last year. I haven't been able to find a replacement either. In a pinch trying to get the game repaired in time for a party, I made a replacement out of a piece of hacksaw blade. It works, but I'm not happy with it. I would love to see someone put a repro together.

since it is Tapper talk....how about the player start buttons? Does anyone know where to get new ones?

The upright and cocktail use the same ones. They're available from multiple vendors including Arcadeshop.

I just posted Repro Tap handles.

Hey, I posted up some repro tap handles. Not 3d printer and exact replica of the originals.

There is a thread that just started for Tapper handle sets ready with pictures of some already completed. We needed a set so made a few and will make more as people need them.

Yep - if I had a set to repro...

Just saying guys probably a good idea to hurry up, or just improve communications. Lots of people need these! ;)
