Replace U25 (6116) on Williams System 11 High Speed pinball with a DS1220 or M48Z02 ?
My High Speed pinball is constantly losing settings, even after replacing batteries and polishing contacts. (I do need to do some additional debugging to see if the blocking diodes are not working and sending power to the rest of the circuit, not just U25, or if something else is triggering a wipe of the contents on 95% of the power-on's I do).
In any case, I was wondering since U25 is a 6116 SRAM, is it possible to replace this with a Dallas DS1220 or an ST Micro M48Z02 battery backed SRAM chip instead?
I have done this on various video games (Q*Bert, Super Pac-Man) to save the scores when power is off.
Since the Williams System 11 specifically has battery backup of this single chip, it seems like this should be a drop-in replacement without any other modifications, other than to remove the onboard AA batteries entirely.
However after searching numerous pinball repair posts, I never saw mention of swapping this 6116 for a simple Dallas/ST battery backed SRAM on a system 11 board. (I've only seen the Simtek 12C68 NV converter solutions) Does that mean it won't work, or simply no one has tried it?
Admittedly I'm a pinball novice, but when it comes the circuit board, it's basically the same as a video game, just with high powered transistors
Any feedback is appreciated!
