What bright ideas do you guys have for replacing the red dome light on a game. I have the red dome itself but no motor/lamp assembly.
I see it is switched 24VAC using a relay, so should be easy to wire any other voltage for it as necessary.
I even looked at the LED bar units.

Are we talking about high speed? If so you might want to take a look at "police lights" or something like that on ebay.

Actually... I did a search for "rotating police light" on ebay and came up with a few things. Some of them actually look pretty affordable:

This is good to know!

If we're talking about a different game I'll have to rethink my suggestions ;)

You are correct on the game :) Well happy to add this to my small collection.
I was looking at lights like that but a little concerned about having 110V in the back box.....Gottlieb did it though with a nasty flu tube !!!!!
I also found things like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/red-...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
That would be cool if not original.
My HS is not anywhere near collector quality so not bothered about originallity but the playfield has very little ware for this game, I have seen one where just about the whole playfield was gone.

Pretty common to find them in that condition. I actually have 2 of them in that condition :)

But... I have an NOS playfield to install one of these years. That link you provided might be cool to incorporate in some way. Personally I wouldn't be too worried about 110VAC because it's sealed and would be pretty tough for anything to happen but ultimately it's up to you. Sometimes better safe than sorry is the best policy. That said... there are more dangerous voltages flying around inside the head (display voltage for example) including 110VAC... just not outside the head.

I was quite surprised that those things are available so cheap (the cop lights). With the original dome you could easily use the guts from one of those things.

Last two that I shopped had dead beacon motors. I too still had the red lenses, so I marched myself down to the local auto parts store, bought a cheapie 12v yellow revolving light for something like $13 and transplanted the guts into the red dome on the High Speed.

Now, to solve the voltage issue, I simply took the output from the little control board and passed it through a generic bridge rectifier which I just mounted inside the backbox by the board. I can't remeber if I wired it full wave or half wave, but I do seem to recall the +/- 24vac of the original circuit was RMS, no load. Once rectified and loaded the light ran around 11-12vdc, perfect for the replacement fixture. I *think* it was full wave with the factory dropping resistors still in place. You'll have to try it and see which way nets you 11-13vdc. I didn't bother with a filter cap, it's just the motor and bulb.

The whole thing cost me around $15 or so and while it don't look original, it looks great, works, and is better than a dead beacon!

BTW, mine had been in storage for many years before I bought it and I went right to the batterys......best before 1992 !!!! and in very poor shape. However, the corrosion had not spread beyond the battery holder itself. So whipped the whole thing off and good to test.
Also the top flipper had stopped working....they do that when the rear bracket falls off LOL.

Good luck trying to find it on PBR website, Steve needs a search added to it !!!
I did find a replacement somewhere, but it was over $150
The unit on ebay is 5" tall and 3' wide so should fit fine.
But I am leaning toward the LED lamp from ebay, modernize the old girl a bit plus my basement is low !!!

Flash lamps

OK, so I re-lamped Highspeed including the flash lamps, all working except 1 where the 5 ohm resistor has fallen off.
But I ran out of 67 for the back glass and used 89 for now, dim but works.
Reading through the repair manuals online and from PDF, I cannot see any schematic specific and correct for these lamps....anyone know of any before I make some up ?
Also, how about using 89 and wire in parallel instead of series ?
Or anyone done white LED for the backglass exhaust and blue LED for the playfield police lamps ? LED's woul;d be far better because they do not need to be warmed up to get that POP effect of immediate light and no large resistors to get super hot and vibrated to death.

So I have bought and fitted these LED lights http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/At-6...ries?hash=item4a9a31f886&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14
I used the old relay but cut the 24vac wires off the original connector and inserted them on to the power board connector that rather conveniently had pins available to tap into the 12vdc line.
I rather like the end result, the lights are bright without killing your eyes.
Had to modify the control unit to make it work on the selected pattern when power is applied.

Is the old red dome worth anything to anyone ? I will not be using it again so will cover the hole.......or should I mount a 10-25w bulb in it LOL

very nice

I have a High- Speed as well, where did you get the lights and how did you install? Please enlighten me fellow High-speed owner. Jeff

I need the dome

Thanks Quattrohead, The dome lense arrived this past Saturday. It had the scuffs you mentioned and Novus #2 polished it up to like new condition, mounted it up and it looks good. Thanks very much, Jeff.

You can get the motor for the original light. I bought mine a few years back but I don't recall which parts house. It was around $80, I believe. I saw one over the past week but I don't recall which site had them. I do know they're readily available.
