Today's patient was a Time Crisis upright with a 27" monitor. The existing tube was a rehabbed unit from arcadecup and was looking quite nasty after a few years (smearing, fuzzy, needed cranked screen voltage to get consistent gun readings, no red) so the decree was issued for a tube swap before the thing went out of commission entirely. A 27" Sharp TV was already set aside for this purpose, and as you can imagine the problems started as soon as we got the tube out.
The yoke was bonded. Emphasis on was: it had been chiseled off the tube right before the convergence magnets and pulled off for the rehab, then taped back together with kapton tape and stuck back onto the tube at the base with that goopy white epoxy stuff. The chassis was a U5000 (also refurbished by arcadecup) without a lot of useful information online about how tolerant it was regarding tube and yoke differences. To do the normal tube-and-yoke swap we would have to find the correct alignment for the yoke and convergence magnets, break the epoxy off and hope the distances were correct on the new tube. We didn't have an inductance meter in the shop to compare impedances, and the resistance on the horizontal winding was 15% off from the original tube's yoke. It was a choice between taking the risk of a busted chassis or hosed geometry, or making an even bigger frankenstein of the monitor and still taking a risk of hosed geometry. We decided to put the TV tube in the cabinet and hook it up to the U5000, yoke and all...
And it worked! The geometry was perfectly fine aside from some bowing in the corners, convergence was almost perfect and the washed-out color was gone. Still no red, but we later figured out that was an issue with the video out on the System 22 board. As far as my partner in crime and I are aware, this is the first publicly documented successful swap of both the tube and the yoke on a U5000 series. Now the only problem is it makes the other gun games next to it look bad
