I hope this gets stickied for a bit, but....

With the new Reputation system - where people can add to other's Reputations by clicking the Reputation button and adding a comment - I think people should start getting into the habit of doing so in the Repair section especially. We have many members who offer plenty of repair help, and it may help newbies trust us better if they know who is considered trustworthy of advice.

While I don't think Reputation points need be given simply for pointing someone to Bob Roberts or ArcArc.Xmission, people who identify the problem for you, point you in the right direction (even if it's not the final fix), or find the info for you that you couldn't find after hours of searching - should get some type of recognition for that help.

So - consider adding to someone reputation if they:

a) successfully give you the correct information to fix your problem.
b) point you in the right direction, allowing either you or somebody else to walk you through the resolution.
c) guide you to that "needle-in-a-haystack" information that you need.

Or anything else worthy af a pat on the back or a hearty handshake. Consider it a virtual way to "buy them a beer" for their help.

I wouldn't be too upset for giving points to those that:

a) correctly identify that long-forgotten game you've been searching for
b) finally vectorize that long-sought-after artwork so it can be reproduced
c) actually reproduce items that help with repair or restoration
d) go out of their way to help somebody move/pack/repair in person

If we have the system, we might as well use it. I may not read every post, but when I see someone who has correctly identified an issue, and the problem was fixed because of that advice, then I am starting to give reputation points for it.

Won't you?

And this has nothing to do with the Trader ratings, btw....

This is exactly what I have been doing since I found out my karma comments are worth something. Mostly here and in the pin forum due to helpful advice.

Didnt even know there was a rep system here!

I have to wonder if its truly useful; isnt all there is as an indicator a little green or gray square? Is there anything really indicating to a newb that that holds an indicator? It just averted my attention until I saw this thread.

Otherwise, I like the idea.

Mod,

It'd be nice but I let my repair logs speak for themselves.

RJ

Considering I don't read your repair logs.... :D

I'm sure a newbie coming here to find out how to replace a power supply connector is going to spend a lot of time digging through repair logs - NOT. Most just want a quick answer without working for it. I'm sure you've offered an answer or three here in the past. Might as well get recognized for it.

I was thinking about this while perusing an old thread about a monitor issue. Fifty responses and every one had to do with an incorrect assumption and none fixed the problem. Then someone with more experience popped in, said "Have you checked this?", and - BAM - the problem is fixed. That last person should get recognition in a way that carries forward.

As for not knowing who gave you the points, sometimes it is very obvious based on what thread it was from. Sometimes not, as I might never post in a thread, but will give recognition when someone comes through on a fix...

I have seen some folks with red. I think the demerits that are handed out by the admins count against them.

Do I get extra credit for karma-whoring in a zombie thread?

You might. But it's good to bump this up. I think the karma whoring will wear off after a while. It's already getting old actually. :) And once people get tired of that it might actually start to be useful. I definitely give karma to those who help out with problems before I give it to anyone else!
