Long story short, the arkanoid I saved a few days back was really a centipede that was converted, badly by the looks of it

I can see the sideart from underneath the black paintjob the last owner did, is there any way i can remove the paint without harming the art underneath? or should I say "screw it" and strip/redo the whole damn thing?

If it was rare art I'd say try... but centipede side art is available.. strip and sand IMHO. It will look best that way.

Citristrip works great. If the artwork underneath was not sanded the paint will not adhere very strongly to the vinyl. No more than 5 minutes of citristrip in an area should allow the paint to be GENTLY scraped off with a plastic scraper and leave 0 damage to the vinyl underneath.

I will find the thread that I made on how I did this with my Afterburner cabinet.

"Next came stripping the old battered vinyl on the bottom and black paint from the cabinet. This was the first time I used the citrus strip. THIS STUFF IS FLAT OUT AWESOME! Fair warning however do not leave it on the paint if vinyl is underlying for more than 5-10 minute or it will strip the vinyl if you intend to keep whats underneath.

My first intention was to simply strip to bare wood; but then I saw the condition of the vinyl on the side access door (which was detaching due to a 30 minute set) and decided to try stripping only the paint since there are other cabinets I need to do this to. The results on the first side look great"

I would not use any solvent strip like goo gone since it will attack the vinyl itself.

Atari sideart is damn near bullet proof. If it was in good shape before it was painted over, you can strip the paint off and it will look damn nice. I have stripped a Dig Dug and a Centipede with 3M Safest Stripper. The acetone in the pic was used for final cleanup. Even it didn't phase the artwork.

And yes, this has been asked many times...... Do a search and you will find many other examples.

Ah, thanks! Yea I'd like to save the art if possible, one side is in good shape, the other side has a nice sized dent where it looks like the movers decided to give it one last kick as they were chucking it in the dumpster. I'm trying to go as cheap as possible so I can pick up a new centipede CP and PCB so unless the side art comes as a set wherever I can find it (I think I have a local vinyl shop that can help me out) I'm gonna restore one side and strip the other

sidenote: I really need to learn to search before I speak :p, this is the second thread I've started that could have been solved with a search
