I am replacing the CPO on my Moon Patrol, and I am not sure what to use to strip the adhesive. I have a citrus stripper and a soy stripper, but I don't want to do anything to the wood that will prevent the new CPO from sticking. Any suggestions?

thanks,
Paul

I've done this once before with a Stargate and am about to do the same with a moon patrol. I used an adhesive remover as purchased from Menards. It does smell up the place a bit, but it works. I believe I used a heat gun to soften up the adhesive securing the old CPO initially. After removing, then you paint on the adhesive remover with a brush, let it sit without letting it dry and use a putty knife to scrape up the adhesive.
When finished it might not be a bad idea to let it sit for a couple days and gently sand the surface a bit. A little wood putty in spots. Throw on a coat of Kiltz sealer and a coat of black enamel.
That's probably going overboard but the wood is thoroughly protected.

I used a heavy duty stripper called StripEze. Follow that with cleanup with a rag and lacquer thinner. After that, I sanded it with a soft sanding block.

Why take off the old adhesive anyway? Won't the new CPO stick fine or does it create problems??

I was just assuming it would be best to start with a completely clean surface. It sure would save a lot of work if that wasn't necessary though.

When I did my Multi Williams I stripped the old adhesive and thoroughly cleaned the wood.
I then fixed any damage and then primed and painted before applying the cpo.
It adhered great all the way to the edge.

You want the surface to be clean so you don't see or feel any imperfections through the new overlay. Some overlays might be thick enough that you won't notice it, but why take the chance?
