I have a Ms. Pac that is pretty rough and was painted black on the sides. I don't know a lot about differences in types of paint but this is pretty thick black. In some spots you can still see some of the original paint showing through. Is there any safe way to get the black off to see the original paint again? Maybe some kind of a stripper? I'm sure there was probably some reason as to why it was painted black. maybe it didn't look good enough for route or something. Anyone got a good idea on this?

Depending on the type of paint you can sometimes use a heat gun and peel it off slowly.

Use citristrip. If there is good art under that paint this is the best way to go. I saved the kick art on my mspac this way, unfortunatly the sides were not perfect so I put vinyl on them. Most of these cabs were painted because they were converted. Sometimes you get lucky and have awesome art under the paint. Such was the case with my killer instinct, looks like a new machine now.

would the citristrip only take off the top layer of paint and leave the original ms pac side art?

It will soften it if you leave it on too long. The best approach is to lay it on thick and try to take all the non original paint off in one application. The original paint is alot tougher than the new stuff but that also depends what they painted it with. Pac art holds up fairly well to paint stripper.

I once did that with a white painted Pac cabinet. Though, I used 3M Safest Stripper. It worked well but requires an EXTREME amount of patience, unfortunatley, more than I had. I was never happy with the way it looked. I was running a Jr. Pac PCB in it for a while, but it failed irrepairably. When that happen, I gutted the cabinet and it got tossed onto a burn pile. At least it got some use before meeting its demise. It was a nasty looking Boardwalk Casino when I got it.
