Remove old Woodgrain Vinyl Before Laminating?

Apparently not all wood grain vinyl is cut of the same cloth. This Frogger was a bear to strip down compared to the Tempest cabaret. The vinyl was more paper like, thinner and only came off in small spots without scraping. It definitely wouldn't come off in large sheets and I had to scrap most of it with a blade even after heavy doses of stripper.

I don't think this was because of age, wear or exposure, it appears to be a different kind of material. Not surprising I guess since each vendor probably used their own type and it probably also varied with the year it was released.

So, sadly no magic bullet for removing this stuff that I've found. :/
