Just bought a Heathkit 5230 rejuvenator, and of course it didn't have the correct adaptor with it, so made one up, did my first tube, and test showed guns very tired. After rejuvenating, I got the gun readings up to 9 (out of 10). Powered up, and the picture is fantastic, but for a while there was alot of what appeared to be shorting going on in the neck of the tube. After a few minutes it settled down, and picture looks brand new!! I followed previous advise and did the rejuvenating face down on a towel....but what I'm wondering, is it OK to do the rejuvenating insitu, in the cabinet??? Thanks in advance.

The "tube face down" bit is really only important when you're trying to remove shorts from the tube. The idea is that any little particles of crud that were shorting out the tube will be 'blown out' by the procedure, and you want them to fall away from the guns. For just rejuvinating weak tubes, in place is fine. Just remember to discharge the tube first.

I agree, but the light show he saw was all of the shorts burning away...

Why would you need to discharge?

hey, did you find a good source for pin connection information? i need to make a CR 23-style adapter for my 5230 but to get the correct pins i have to do a bunch of translating from B&K paperwork which doesn't always seem to match quite right.

once i get it i want to start making up some reference sheets so other people can easily do the same as the 5230's are cheap and plentiful.

I'm not sure about "best results", but I almost always rejuv in the cab, and I usually end up with a great picture afterwards....

Why would you need to discharge?

The manual for my rejuvenator implied that the alternative could involve an HV discharge path through the tube rejuvenator via the pins on the CRT socket, with catastrophic results for the rejuvenator.

Interesting... I don't believe there's any such warning in my manual. No catastrophic results yet.... :D

I've only been shocked by the neck pins once, and that was due to a small crack in the neck that I hadn't noticed...

Because a charged tube will _destroy_ or severely damage the rejuvenator!

While I'm sure this can happen, I've rejuvved a couple hundred tubes without manually discharging first, and my BK 490 still works fine...

My Heathkit came with a basic pinout, showing where the 7 wires went, and my chassis was brand new, and on the back of the neck board was screen printed heater, G1, G2 Red Green & Blue, so was dead easy to make it!!

Ok, will give it a go in the cabinet. I have read many of your posts, so trust your judgement.

The shorts burning off that I saw in the neck....is that OK (as they stopped after a minute or so)??

Thanks to all for your advice

im in the same boat with a CR 23 adapter and the 5230. i need the pinout too and any info would help me out. i think im going to fry something bad if i hook it up wrong. please help me.

well, i've got several different neckboards that take the CR 23-style pinout so i'll take a look and see if any have which pin is which screened on them.

fortunately i did get the what seems to be the "complete" paperwork kit with my 5230 which is just the build/instruction manual and the schematic/parts sheet. the s/p sheet has enough info that i should be able to cobble everything together.

I discharge because Ken says it's a good idea. No other reason needed. Takes all of 20 extra seconds of my time... why push it?
