I've searched on the site and can't find a definitive answer. I have a Donkey Kong with what appears to be original Asahi Seiko coin mechs. The face plates are obviously all scratched up and don't look great. What's the conventional wisdom on how to refinish these? What are the plates made of? Do they just need a good sanding and polishing? I've seen some people paint them and others do some sort of electroplating.

Any other help would be appreciated!

I sanded mine with 80 grit then 120 grit using one of those sanding pads you add to your drill. It turned out pretty nice.

I sprayed it with some metallic spray paint i got from a craft store, but it wouldnt stick to the metal so i removed the paint as it kept coming off on my fingers days later...

they look fine to me with just sanding them down, kind of a brushed metal look.

You can actually get brand new ones from Asahi.
There actually pretty affordable.
I think last time I checked they were like $8 or $9.
Just a thought.

I think my problem with painting was that my son likes to play with the coin return knob and another groove would be worn into the paint if I painted.

Thanks everyone.

I think I've read somewhere that they had a $50 minimum order. Can anyone confirm that?

I've painted them before:

That kind of paint did you use?

If somebody gets an Asiah Seiko order going let me know. I could use another set of faceplates.

This may be obvious but if you paint it, you probably want to prime it first so that it doesn't rub off.

I painted my OEM faceplates for my DK because they were in decent shape. It wasn't until after I did it that I found out I could order direct from the source.

Though, they changed their policy where you have to make a $50+ order to open an account. Of course, those who have ordered before that policy was put into place were grandfathered in.

If I got enough interest, I would possibly be willing to make a bulk order.

Jess I have an account but if you do order some I would be in for 2 DK style face plates and 2 for DKJR style(with the lever instead of the push button)
and 2 ea. bugles to go with them.Think about it for a while and let me know if you decide to order a bulk buy or not.

I have an account too (grandfathered I suppose) but I only need a single faceplate, lever and perhaps a bugle for a 730-A. I'd be interested in adding to your order. Unless someone has an entire new mech they wanna sell me , hint, hint.

I am planning on making a bulk order for mechs, faceplates, bugles, cups, buttons, etc. I had planned on doing just the 740 model but if there is interest I will get the 730 as well.

I didn't want to make a thread for it yet as I am trying to get some money together for it, but I will get one started as I plan to do this soon.

I was going to just take orders towards a cut off date and then send out invoices to receive payments before placing an order. But if you're going to buy in bulk in advance, then I won't bother. Haha.

Thanks for the offer! I'll try to refinish mine this weekend. If it doesn't turn out well I may want to order a pair.

Another question for you all. It's hard to tell from some of the photos posted, but what was the original finish like? Was it matte or glossy? Chrome or gray or silver?

Thanks!
