Red Alert GCI cabinet control panel vs. Galaga control panel

I have this GCI Red Alert upright cabinet, that literally was redone by an idiot.

The control panel was covered with some strange overlay from a video display cabinet or something. I can strip it no problem but the layout of the holes aren't exactly what I'd like. I can't patch these metal holes.

Anyway, I have to find a better overlay for this control panel OR I replace it with a different control panel. I was thinking about getting an old Galaga control panel and using that instead.

My question is, has anyone worked on a GCI Red Alert Cabinet before? Would the control panels for that and a Galaga be a clean swap? They look quite similar:

The GCI panel is 23 inches long. The top panel is 7 inches deep, and the front section is 4 inches deep.

I would say it would be more trouble, much more trouble, to adapt a panel from another game than it would be to reconfigure the one you have.

How do you want the layout to change? Will the holes you need overlap with the ones there? If not, get some JB Weld, some thin sheet from a home improvement store, and some snips. Cut out a square or disk large enough to cover the hole. JB Weld it from the back then fill the hole from the top with some bondo. Sand flush.

If the holes will overlap just take it to a metal shop and have a that hole or holes plugged, welded, and ground flush.
