I have heard many NES and 2600 sounds being recycled over the years and wondered if anyone else has? The biggest one for me has been the blade clashing sound from Ninja Gaiden on the NES. I have heard that sound appear in Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible" and in Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up". Any others? Or have you heard that Ninja Gaiden sound anywhere else?

The sound is similar, but I'm almost certain the Robert Palmer song predates the Ninja Gaiden NES game.

The most commonly recycled sounds are from Atari 2600 Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Any time people are seen playing games on TV or in a movie, you'll hear sounds from one of those games.

Dangit, Shawn, now I'm trying to remember the song I heard a DOOM sound from. Every time it plays somewhere, I hear it. It's a relatively modern song, too, I think...?

It's the sound that happens when you enter the final level. Kind of an eery "Sccchhhooock!" noise, when a flaming head comes out of the evil wall in front of the Marine. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

So true, weird to watch the kid on Home Improvement playing a gane boy and hear 2600 dk sounds! And that is just one example!

I liked Gwen until she went solo. In the words of Brian Griffin "I dont know what a hollaback girl is, all I know is I want her dead".

These arent NES or Atari related but I awlays like hearing these...

There is a whole lot of sound recycling out there for sure. I've seen many shows, commercials or movies that use sounds from games. There are a few that originated in Doom, some from Starcraft.

I do know that there is a gas station near me called Noco and their cash registers make "ring" sounds that sound exactly like the ring sounds in the Sonic the Hedgehog games. They also make "uh oh" sounds that also sound like they were from a game but I can't place it.

It does, by 2 years. Can't help thinking it's the same sound though, it's identical to the sample played in Smack My Bitch up. Speaking of Ninja Gaiden, time to fire mine up on the old NES.

I once saw while channel surfing a kid playing Jet Set Radio while Galaga sound effects played
