I've been trying to think of some ways to pick up some extra money here and there, but unfortunately working on arcade games is not a very highly requested skill nowadays. :p

So I come to you, my target audience, to see if you have any interest in monitor recapping. I know some of you offer this service already, I'm not trying to step on any toes I promise, but the people that I know of offer other services as well (pcb repair). Maybe I could help free up your time for bigger, more complicated repairs?

I would start out small, probably only accept G07s at first. Am I wasting my time? Would anyone take me up on it?

Taken from the monitor FAQ:

But the picture is distorted/washed out/crummy!:

Then you might be due to replace the electrolytic capacitors in your monitor. Over time, these capacitors dry out and function poorly. Sometimes they can leak too. Electrolytic capacitors look like little cylinders, and are all over the monitor's chassis. It's pretty common practice with these older monitors to simply change all of them at one shot, since they're all 20 years old or older at this point. This is known as a "cap kit". To order a cap kit, you must determine the model of your monitor, and order the kit from Bob Roberts, ArcadeShop, Zanen Electronics, or other arcade supplier. Alternatively, you can write down the values of the individual components and order them from Mouser or any other electronic supplier. Problems usually solved by cap kits:

- folded over picture
- smeared, faded colors
- distorted picture
- dim lines in picture
- touchy sync

No problem with others offering to do what I, Chad, and others already do. You need to let others know what your repair skills for monitors are also, for when the cap kit doesn't fix it.

And for the G07, you'd be doing flybacks, too, at the very least...

good way to make some extra cash

as long as you are doing quality work

some of the big guys do crap work
i wont mention a name or the service provider
but a local guy sent a monitor chassis to them
1st time it cam back no workie

second time sent back no workie (and was todl its the yoke on your monitor thats blowing the chassis)

third time (after we sold the guy a new tube)
came back no workie and again the big name monitor repair person says its a problem with the tube not the repair work

he brought it to us
2 hours later he left with his original tube and a fully working monitor

pluss id rather bring a monitor to someone and place it in their hands and then when i pick it up i can see it works
rather than sending a chassis off to someone that repairs things on a test station without ever hooking the chassis to a real tube

Keep in mind not all places service all monitors. Arcadecup doesn't work on Nanao 293x series.

you might be best doing it as a local thing for fellow collectors that aren't fluent in monitor repair or other things. also, local is nice as that way you're close when something goes wrong, or the person doesn't feel comfortable pulling a chassis out, etc.

That would definitely be welcome as well. I've done some random work for some non-KLOVers in the area recently.

I've had some positive responses via PM, so I think I might try just G07s for a while to get my feet wet.

you know, other minor stuff will help too. a lot of people don't know how to replace line cords, install a switcher, etc. so offering basic repairs that aren't in depth will probably work as well.

That's what I was talking about above, actually. I've been advertising on CL the last week or two, I'm sure the locals have seen it. I haven't seen any response to the ads by KLOVers, but I get quite a few people who just have broken cabs in their garage, or want me to find them a certain game.

Don't forget the sync mods on the G07... those pesky incorrect factory installed resistors that need replacing.

You mean I could charge money for recapping intead of pizza and beer? laughs.

I typical get friend or customer who says. It don't work. Can you come over and fix it.
I rarely get the I need to recap a monitor can you fix it for me.

Or the typical I recapped it and it still doesn't work or it not working all together LOL.
Or typical what do you mean you don't carry all the spare boards in you truck LOL.
Or just tell me what wrong over the phone and I will buy the part off of ebay.

Good luck in your montior recapping business :)

For sure. Capping a G07 and not replacing the flyback is bad news.
