Reasons for Flyback exploding???

I was recently working on a G07 with a bad fuse (the smaller one). I replaced the fuse and upon doing so, figured I'd recap it as well. After the cap kit, I powered it up and the flyback exploded... scared the hell outta me (nearly soiled my armor). Inspecting the flyback, there is a crack the entire circumference of the casing.

My question is this. I have another flyback and hot for a G07, is there anything that can cause the flyback to burst open like that other than a weakened casing / faulty flyback? (yes, I believe it was the original flyback).

I'll try replacing it if it's unlikely I'll have the same result from a new flyback/hot or is there another component failure that can cause this to happen?

Thanks,

Tom

Edit: I'm sure I'll need to inspect all surrounding components for damage

that poor old fly never knew what was coming...

new caps= higher voltage, higher then that fly has seen in 20 years... so on powerup- kablammo!!!!!!!!

if you have leads touvhng etc mabye that wouldnt help matters but im guesing most likely the fly puked just die to age and newly found voltage...

as with anny monitoer check it for sold solder whil tits apart and check the power supply diodes to make sure they didnt short out on ya..

lol...i suspected the cap kit may have done me in..but I wanted to make sure prior to trying an attempt at a resurrection that the flyback issue was indeed a flyback issue.

I'll check solder and the ps diodes...thanks (I still may power this up from the other side of the room though )

I have preached it before , dont bother capping a go7 without changing a flyback and HOT, could be a minute, week, month or year , it will crap out on you

Apparently the OP didn't check into what a "proper G07 rebuild" consisted of, otherwise he would have seen the numerous mentions we make about replacing original flybacks when doing cap kits.

I'm waiting for the guy who always says "I've never had a flyback explode after a G07 cap kit" to post....

well I am not going to say they all exploded but there definately was at least a 90% failure rate, the others I later replaced when the parts showed up. I mainly buy my caps, regs and HOTS local so usually I just get my flys through Bob , width coils as well

Gah... 5 months into the hobby and already getting grief! I'm simply looking to enjoy the experience of exploding flybacks...

i'm serious too, i really do wear them.

Oh..I wasn't doubting you, and will probably incorporate the same practice, but for this one, I'm not getting anywhere near it!. It was after midnight when I plugged it in... I was definitely not ready for it... I'm thinking some therapy may be in order :)

Just an FYI.....on G07 monitors, if that "little" fuse is blown.....it's highly likely the flyback is already blown. You just gave it one last kick.

Just giving you a little shit. We only mention it every time someone asks about recapping a G07...

Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing... since the flyback fuse was blown, your flyback was already dead... when you let it power up again, it went big. You gotta be careful when that fuse is blown, since the large cap still holds a LARGE charge (I always short the cap whenever working on a G07, many times it pops... and BIG too).

But yeah, especially when working on G07s, I put my head around the side of the cabinet when powering up... I've had chunks of the the ferrite core shoot across the room when the flyback blows.

Yeah, if that little fuse was blown when you started, there's a very good chance the flyback was already blown. Giving it power again just blew it more :D Double check your HOT - it might be blown again too..

It really depends on the chassis, some G07's I've seen have already had their flybacks changed, likely many years ago - those flybacks have always been fine, even after a recap. But then I've had some where the fly was original, but still working - those are hit or miss. Did one that lasted a week before dying in a wonderful cloud of smoke. Had others that are still going strong.

The way I do it, if the little fuse/HOT is blown when I get it, I put a new flyback in. If the monitor was working before, I leave the old flyback (provided there is no evidence of cracking/heating) - sometimes they work fine, sometimes they blow. But it's usually worth a shot.
