Real Life Zookeeper?

What really bugs me about this story is what a piece of sh*t the owner must've been.

He knew (had to) that letting all of those animals loose would not only endanger them, but endanger people. How could you claim to care for the animals, and then do that to them? How could you endanger people like that?

Someone should've taken this jerk's "pets" long ago. Maybe Ohio will toughen up on its laws as a result. At least he'll never be a menace again.

Yeah, the orders to Shoot to Kill immediately made me queasy, but having these carnivores running around able to kill and consume children or adults at any given moment made me even queasier. It was getting dark right after the call came in, they didn't have much choice. I agree on the owner, what a piece of human garbage.

The cops did`nt have to go on a killing spree. They could have got elephant tranquilizers & rounded them up more humanly. It is a shame the guy killed himself because they could have rounded up all the animals, put them back on his property & see how long he could keep jumping over the animals like "ZEKE" for his punishment !!!

I heard them talking about this on the radio this morning, and knew most KLOVers would be all... "Wut?" :D

I'll have to check that link later. Any updates? Wonder how many are accounted for?

I've been listening to the radio about this all day. As much of a shame I think it is that most if not all those animals were slaughtered simply because their owner was a piece of human garbage, I still believe that the police acted the right way due to the situation. They simply didn't have the time to acquire enough tranquilizers for approximately 48 animals moving in completely different directions. The police were dispatched to specific areas to prevent the animals from entering housing developments, public areas and school. As said as I am about the loss of all those animals, the danger to the public was just too great and as far as I know besides the sh*tbag owner, no other people were killed.

There's still a monkey loose, which might be a big concern.

Ask Chandra Nash, face-transplant recipient, how dangerous they can be if threatened, frightened, or mentally off...

This has got to be a dream come true for some of those Sheriff's deputies--safari in their own backyard!

The owner probably wasn't thinking straight anyway.. he killed himself, so he was probably mentally ill or something.

Wonder why the animals didn't eat him? Or did they? Do you think any of them got into fights as they were leaving? Like Lions and Grizzlies or Wolves and Mountain Lions? Woulda been cool to see how they reacted to each other once the barriers were down.

My guess is that it was more like a prison bus overturning. One glance, and then "F*ck that, we're free. See ya, buddy."

I read that some of the animals had his body surrounded when the police got there...

This story is unfolding about 1.5 hours from me so there is a lot of local coverage. One report said a monkey was eaten by another animal on the property. As for the decision to kill the animals, reports indicated there was chaos when law enforcement first arrived at the property before they discovered the owner was dead. Several animals were killed early on trying to find the owner and a few were saved.

Law enforcement consulted with Jack Hanna along other animal experts and the decision was made to kill the animals. Right or wrong, the reports claim it was not practical to tranquilize the animals so close to dusk since they need to be tracked while the tranquilizer takes effect. Either a lion or tiger was shot with a tranquilizer but continued to flee the property and they were forced to kill the animal. I don't blame them for not wanting to track a wild animal in the woods with night approaching considering it was not known how many other animals might have escaped.

While I understand the position of not wanting to kill the animals, that outcry comes from a vocal minority in my opinion and pales in comparison to the outcry if one person was injured or killed by an escaped animal if the decision was not made to shoot-to-kill. It is easy to criticize those decisions but it has to be a difficult task to ensure the safety of the public and restore order. I doubt there is protocol and training exercises for capturing lions, tigers and other exotic animals in Ohio.

I'm not seeing much of that vocal minority in the news. In most of the stories I've read, animal activists said they understood what the police had to do.

The loose monkey most likely has hepatitis. I see no reason to hold back if you can't get them easily with traquilzers shoot to kill, it isn't like is is one brown bear, we are talking about Lions, Tigers, and Grizzly Bears.

I have a cousin that owned a game farm and he had all sorts of animals (tigers, moose, bears). They kept bob cats as house pets, which is enough to tell you that they are crazy.

His children sent all the animals to other zoos after he passed away.

IN the interview the police were not as concerned about the monkey as they were about the mountain lion and the grizzly. I thought that was kind of funny since mountain lions and grizzlies are native not exotic. I would guess the cause for concern is that they were captive and not wild.

There's still a monkey loose, which might be a big concern.

As someone else stated, local coverage has been all over this.
They did indeed contact the nearby zoo and even Jack Hanna himself...both suggested taking the animals down as opposed to trying to save them because of the immediate danger they posed to the locals. The zoo did take in 6 of the animals though IIRC. They suspect the monkey they are still searching for has hepatitis. Pretty bizarre all around.

I was driving though Ohio along I-80W on the way to Pinball Expo when I heard this on the radio! LOL! All I was thinking was I better not need to go to a rest stop anytime soon!

Back in my Motherland. My parents still live in OH and called me when this broke out. The animal deaths have risen since they told me before by about 8 animals. The word around there is that the guy could not afford to feed them all. They were like his children and rather than put them down or sell them, he let them go and blew his head off.

Whatever the case it's sad. Those animals are dead because someone thought a grizzly and tiger would make fun pets. It's moronic actually. I am ALL for individual rights and LESS government power, but there comes a point when stupidity needs to be controlled at the sake of others safety. Thank goodness, nobody has been killed thus far. It's really sad these animals had to die because of some dumb ass.

My guess is that he could not afford to do anything after being convicted of possession of unregistered fully automatic weapons. So he did himself in and to spite society he freed the beasts.
