Ready Player One

Saw the movie last night - just want to make a friendly suggestion: if you are in this hobby and liked the movie make a point to read (or listen) to the book. All I will say is that I absolutely LOVED the book. Audiobook with Wil Wheaton narrating is fantastic.

Lots of the mature content from the book is toned down considerably, and I will take my 9 and 12yo to see it, no problem. There is some bad language, but nothing worse than any of the other comic book based action movies of the day.

I liked it, but the 80s nostalgia that was front and center in the book (including the classic arcade games) is really not an emphasis in the movie.

I guess if you were hoping that the prices of your Joust, Pac Man, and Tempest machines were going to sky rocket after the movie, you'll be dissappointed.

Maybe Atari will instead. ;)

Just saw it. If I hadn't read the book it would have been terrific. As always the book was way better than the movie.

I kept saying to myself, "why not do it the way it was in the book, easier and better"

And they should have had way more 80's references. Kind of a hit and miss there.

But it was well worth watching and I will watch it again to see what I missed.

LOVED the book, hoping to see the movie soon. I'm afraid I'll probably recognize way less in the movie than I did in the book. Still looking forward to seeing it though.

I had read the book and knew the movie would be a bit of a disappointment, but of course had to see it. It surprisingly exceeded expectations.

I took my 9 year-old daughter and she loved it also, although she was a little scared of the Shining and Chucky references.

Lately I haven't watched movies more than once, but we both want to go back and pick out details we missed the first go-around.

I was hoping it would be more dystopian, but the adaptation was done well based on the amount of story Spielberg had to cover.

Can we get a separate thread with spoilers?

This one seems to be a 'no spoilers' and 'can my kids see it?' thread. I'd like to hear discussions/opinions of the actual movie content.

And they should have had way more 80's references. Kind of a hit and miss there.

I read an interview with Ernest Cline, and he said that Spielberg was very humble and uncomfortable referencing his own works in the movie, even though they were referenced heavily in the book. Spielberg was ok with Back to the Future references because even though he produced it, it was directed by Robert Zemeckis. I couldn't help wondering if the lack of 80s references had something to do with Spielberg steering away from his own stuff, to avoid being accused of self-aggrandizement. That combined with time constraints and copyright issues too of course.

Alfie Bown, a fu$&ing clown. Speilberg is a well known liberal and would take part in producing an "alt-right" film? Garbage writer with a garbage opinion. It's people like this who prove journalism is dead...but at least they stuck this in the opinion section. Can't you just enjoy a film without worrying about politics?

Just got home from seeing it. I absolutely loved it. I can't wait to finish reading the book now, because it sounds like this could be one of those situations where it's better to watch the movie first, and follow up with a seemingly even better version like the book.

Same, just got back and freaking nerded the hell out in the theater!! All the Alien and Aliens references had me in love!!!!! Very great movie. (Only gripe was non original m41a pulse rifle sound was used...[emoji24])

Get ready for Williams games to go up further in demand...robotron and joust especially. A taito space invaders was in there also.
