Just finished watching the movie tonight...I enjoyed the movie but I enjoyed the book quite a bit more.

I was surprised how little video games were involved in the movie, but still enjoyed it... I would give it a solid B

My wife's sister is in town with her two teenage boys and is taking them to see it tomorrow.

Question: My wife is thinking about taking our kids whom are 7 and 9 and I was wondering if its appropriate for kids of that age?
Not sure why it wouldn't be, but my wife asked.

PM sent to avoid any spoilers to people :D

Hmmm... That's tough because it's a bit relative... I do recall one use of the f-word and "sh!t" several times... And a naked women gets out of a bathtub and you see her only from the back... It is milder than the book... All the violence is mainly in the oasis and that makes the violence very cartoon like and it also means no one is shown dieing in the movie.

I really enjoyed the movie and I thought any potential deviations...if they exist...allegedly ;) were generally big steps forward compared to the scenes that would have otherwise appeared. A few things may have been scrambled, but it kept fans of the book on their toes instead of being just a complete rehash of some (frankly boring-to-watch) 'action' scenes that appear in the book.

Even though some classic arcade games make a bit less of an appearance than you might expect, video games generally were well-represented. And he has good taste in pinball.

(That's about it for now, to avoid spoilers)

Bought my ticket this morning for the 7pm show tonight.

I did the audio book version of the book...my very first audio book and i loved it.

Im sure the movie will not be as good as the book becuase it never is but i know it will be good.

Bummer that u memtion arcade games arent as prominent in the movie like in the book.

So without encouraging spoilers of any kind, is this something I could take my 10 year old kid to watch? I need an excuse to go see it.

I'm not so concerned about him being exposed to cinematic violence, mild nudity, guns and the like (he's pretty mature/sensible on that front), more will it be too complicated for him to follow after 30 minutes?

Looking forward to seeing it also, but would also like to know if it's appropriate for my almost-9-year-old son.

He's an avid reader already, but after reading the book myself I felt that it was probably still a bit too mature for him just yet. But I also figure that the movie would be toned down so that younger kids could still see it (since the producers probably want to include this demographic so as garner more ticket sales :) ) .

Any non-spoiler information on that front would be appreciated.

How would it compare to say the latest Star Wars and/or Marvel superhero movies (most of which he has seen and he certainly has enjoyed)?

Jon

Lots of the mature content from the book is toned down considerably, and I will take my 9 and 12yo to see it, no problem. There is some bad language, but nothing worse than any of the other comic book based action movies of the day.

I liked it, but the 80s nostalgia that was front and center in the book (including the classic arcade games) is really not an emphasis in the movie.

I guess if you were hoping that the prices of your Joust, Pac Man, and Tempest machines were going to sky rocket after the movie, you'll be dissappointed.

I agree... it was was toned down, and I would say that the f - word was probably what ensured the pg-13 rating... as of-13 movies go it was on the mild side... if you regularly take your kids to pg13 movies I think this one is going to be ok. The movie is much simpler plot wise than the book which had to happen to make it fit to a 2 hour 20 minute movie...

And yes, this movie did nothing to help arcade game price inflation:) you can see games in the background, but they are only set pieces and are it involved in the plot AT ALL like they were in the book.

I loved the scene where Super Mario kicks Ernest Cline in the taint...jk I'm seeing later tonight.

Looking forward to it!

We're watching it again tonight (second time) on a 3D IMAX screen. Yes, it's worth multiple viewings. The movie is stuffed with so many references and quick glimpses that you're likely not to catch it all. The great thing about the film is that the story is kept simple and easy to understand. You don't have to know about anything that happened in the 80s to understand the movie. Anything that's really specific is described through clever exposition. Yes, it's different from the book, but then it really had to be to squeeze it into a two-ish hour movie.

Didn't read the book but just watched the movie. I went in with average expectations, the trailer really didn't grab me. Happy to say it surpassed my expectations. Both me and my 12 year old son loved it and gave it a solid 9.5. It's the type of movie where gamers young and old can appreciate, and man, I'll admit I teared up (pun not intended:)) towards the end. Great movie....If I had read the book perhaps I'd be angry at how different it may have been but I didn't.

I took my seven and nine year old. There are a few "shits" and one F word. The Shining reference was a little scary but overall we all loved it.

Just returned from the movies..i thought it was fantastic!

I would have liked it to be a trilogy but doing it all in one movie works. It is not EXACTLY like the book but it worked for me. I watched an interview with speilberg about a week ago and he saidhe wanted to make a movie that people would not have to be 100% familiar with arcade games so that way non-gamers can enjoy it also BUT there are enough arcade/video game references to keep it interesting for the enthusiast. Its nothing like the book where arcades were front and center of the story.

I loved the movie and id buy it when it comes out and i dont buy many current movies.

There's your PG-13 rating, right there. That rating has pretty much become worthless these days. It seems that if you show any blood on the screen, you get an automatic R rating these days.

I'm not sure when this emasculation of the rating started, but it really sucks.

I take it Tomb of Horrors did not make the cut? :(

Unfortunately, no. I did, however, appreciate the nod to the Atari 2600. It was a well-placed deviation.

The movie was good for what it was - an adaptation. As always, the book allowed my imagination to create more for me. But that's true of nearly every film based on a book.

One of the last scenes has 3 games in the background. What was the game next to the space invaders? I think I know, but want to confirm.
