Ready Player One Spoilers Thread

What's with the weird Wad Watts question at the end? "What are you?" Holladay is not a simulation? Is this a hint to a sequel?

Definitely added to create an air of the next mystery. He really died but did he figure out a way to upload his soul? His avatar in the contest seemed to be very interactive to the point he was wisecracking ("do you want it or not?").

This thread is for after you have seen the movie.

I thought Wade only asked him if he was an AVATAR (vs a simulation) - meaning Wade was asking if Halliday was alive or if someone was in the oasis playing the part of Halliday. When he said "no" I took that to mean he was just a program written by Halliday, which was consistent with the book. I think that was put in there so folks watching the movie didn't think Halliday was still alive...

Saw it. It was definitely mostly fun. But I felt there were a few tragic plot holes in the movie.

First off, they could have spent more time just using 80's music to carry the plot, Instead of bringing in the orchestral score to tell us how we should feel. Frikking annoying though I enjoyed the tunes they used.

Next the drones carrying in flashing bombs to destroy Wade's aunt's stack. While I guess drones are ubiquitous in the future, don't you figure someone would have noticed drones flying around with flashing limpet mines landing all over the superstructure of the stack? kinda shows that the director thinks the audience is not paying attention.

What the hell was all the cryptic talk about the "resistance" when Wade first meets Samantha and never a mention about it again?

For those who read the book first:

For all the elaborate back story buildup with Wade Narrating, why delete the highschool aspect of the storyline? And why after saying years had passed since Halliday's death and his first announcement of the easter egg hunt, why try to crunch the entire story into what seemed like less than 3 days?

I could continue..

The "resistance" comment... they appeared to be a group fighting directly against IOI - in the movie Art3mis says her father dies enslaved by IOI because he got into debt - so she was part of a group whose goal was to fight against IOI rather than the goal of the egg... one in the same I guess but she/them seemed more motivated by opposition to IOI than the egg itself...

I missed the buildup to finding the first key... the book never had a chance to replicated as a movie though... because trying to get in all the 80s/arcade game detail would have been annoying to those who don't geek out on it... maybe if there had been a plan to do 3 movies, but I think it was too risky... similar to the third divergent movie not getting made... it could have been handled in two though maybe...

It's definitely hinting that Halliday is somehow alive in the Oasis.... Which I thought the book would actually get into but it just said he was dead.

I saw the movie last night using movie pass... I wouldn't pay full money for this. Every single person I've talked to has rated it a "5/10" which is.. pretty sad for a Spielberg flick.

I felt pandered to. Constantly. I know it's supposed to trigger nostalgia but it's more like slapping you in the face with it. While it's nice that kids nowadays are appreciating stuff from the 80s and 90s... I just feel like it's surface level. Most of the younger generation watching it are probably only interested in the cool vfx and the futuristic utopia of oasis. Not the actual 80s stuff.

Plus I was bummed they basically removed all of the arcade related stuff and instead just stuck it in for background filler. Atari 2600? I mean sure the Adventure thing was a nice tie in... but they couldn't put in one arcade game being played?

Also characters are all still two dimensional with no personalities... girl is still attractive but with a birthmark on her eye... same stupid, I still love you even though you're "hideous" that wins over Artemis and makes her like Parzival.

Plus so many plot holes all I could do was sit back and enjoy it as a mediocre popcorn flick. Mainly... how the heck are they spinning around 360 dancing while still remaining upright strapped into a device? The one guy just literally sits in a chair? The biggest thing with the tech that bugged me is that they treated it like a fully immersive world yet you could still see people through your visor IRL and communicate to them. Dude... when I put headphones on and play games I literally cannot hear sh** 2 feet away from me. Are we supposed to believe they are fully immersed in this living and breathing world yet can hear someone talking softly next to them IRL?

Okay sorry, one more post. BIGGEST problem is the Oasis death system thing. Sure it seemed neat, but I'm not sure how the world of Oasis would actually function when there is zero penalty for killing people and only the reward of their loot.

Zero penalty for killing. You get all their loot for killing... Which would essentially lead to a slaughterhouse simulator where it's just nonstop PvP. Nobody would ever attain a high level because all it takes is one good shot and you're toast. You can't let your guard down for 2 seconds. There doesn't appear to be safe zones either.

Parzival gets attacked by multiple people in a nightclub and barely survives it... only because he had an item that literally freaking turned back time. Otherwise he's dead there... they get all his loot, and he starts over. Seems pretty lame, TBH.

Seems to be zero law enforcement in the game. No admins... no rules... Just kill anyone and take their stuff.

Also on a side note... for a virtual world where you can be anyone or anything, there was a disturbing lack of busty nearly naked women... lol. Not saying I needed to see that, but come on... online games right now are full of them.

I went to see it last night not knowing anything about the story, and thought it was OK.

The part I hated the most was watching the Rampage preview.

Why is Hollywood doing this to my childhood memories...

I read the book 4 years ago, so admittedly, some of it I don't remember. I enjoyed the movie, but IMO the book was better, as it always is. People complaining about the nostalgia seem to miss the entire point. I thought the company CEO guy was kind if a caricature. The only thing missing was twirling a moustache.

It was a disappointment they changed the entire first challenge. Speaking of which....

Has anyone noticed that the world has seemed to completely ignore Generation X? Things went straight from the Boomers to the Millenials. Spielberg and the studio decided that sticking too close to the story would alienate the masses. Heaven forbid a millenial not know what they were looking at. They seemed to forget it's Gen X that the book was written for in the first place.

Reading some of the replies in this thread leads me to believe some of you guys are total buzzkills. Like everyone walks around in the real world with wedgies. I smiled through most of the movie letting my inner child enjoy the nostalgia and watching my kids have the same appreaciation as I. Even the wife enjoyed it which is rare.

So you're saying any critical thought on any movie is just whining, huh? Seem kinda Vacuous. I also enjoyed the movie, as I have enjoyed many movies, and standing alone this movie had plot holes.

I am happy that you bonded with your wife over a B rate movie.

Im saying turn off your adult brain and just enjoy things as they are....kinda like when you were a kid. At least thats how I was, I wasn't critical or over analyzing. I know its trendy now to hate everything.

I had to google Vacuous by the way.....lol. I guess I'm a dumbass, thats ok though..........I'll stick to my neanderthal vocabulary. Happy Easter!
