Worse than Liquor: Results
38 silverball enthusiasts entered and the Pacific Pinball Museum had a record day with
several parties in attendance on top of the tourney madness. There was great play, a great mix of players of all levels, and great nachos (if I may be so bold...)
Each player that entered also got an official Flynn's Arcade token from Disney's California Adventure.
With up to 24 qualifying spots for Novices, and plaques awarded to top
6 in each division, nearly a third went home with something.
The outcome of the Novice Finals seemed certain at first. Mitch scored 6 to Mike's 3 in the first round of two, and it wasn't looking good for Mitch. The pressure had to be on - after all, Michael Schiess is the currator of the PPM and the guy who puts on the Pacific Pinball Expo.
But the Mitch-Maker rose up with a huge hole-in-one on Doctor Who to put the screws back to Mike. Mike had to start Multi or earn 50M within four balls to tie, or 3 to win. Personally, I thought the shorter lightning flips of Doctor Who might have suited him, but NO! Mike goes out with 8, and Mitch takes the top spot. Congrats Mitch!
Top 8 in Novice:
7: Selena Shook
7: Jeannie Rodriguez
6: Chris De Leon
5: Jason Delaro
4: Michael Scheiss
3: Justin Haber
2: David R.
1: Mitch Tunick
Open Playoffs were a mixed bag of the usual names and some surprises.
Some of the mid-level league players in both EBPL and BAPA really came
up to take on some of the tournament stalwarts like Tim Hansen and
Andrei Massenkoff.
After two rounds of semi and quarter finals, however, the herd had been culled and the skill was
ever-present. It was down to Tim Hansen, Andrei Massenkoff, Hal
Erickson and Walter Hurwitz. In a recent BAPA final, Walter went toe-
on with Andrei, losing decisively but still showing plenty why he got
there.
Since it was the Pacific Pinball Museum, I looked for a historical mix
of DMD, classic(SS) and 70s EM games that represented the venue. I was
hoping to throw people off a little and shake them out of the norm.
But there was one guy who was truly in his element...
Walter: 10
Tim: 4
Andrei: 2
Hal: 1
Finals were on the Visual Pin (Surf Champ). Walter "will there be nachos?" Hurwitz was already in the also-rans with 10 in game 1 but then put down a big hole-in-one. Just too late to matter. Finished with a score of 11.
Andrei Massenkoff - ranked 6th in the world, got 5 for a total of 7.
The pressure was on Tim Hansen and he got a HUGE HOLE IN ONE when it really counted.
This put the pressure on old school legend and controversial player, Hal Erickson. Finish it in 4 to tie, or 3 to win.
Hal has a pinball rap sheet a mile long, but, what can you say? Amazing play. Do it when it counts. Love him or hate him, the guy has some serious skills and he proved it that night. Got it in 3 to get Tim by 1 ball.
HUGE CONGRATULATIONS: HAL ERICKSON HAS WON THE "WORSE THAN LIQUOR"
TOURNAMENT.

Huge SUPER JACKPOT thanks to Mark and Theresa Altvater for their
tremendous help with this event. Mark made really nice wooden plaques
that went to the top 3 in both Open and Novice. They had flippers and a
pinball inlaid. Both are new to the competitive scene but already
awesome and generous contributors.
Thanks also to the usual crew of helpers from BAPA and EBPL: Alex
Samonte, Jeannie Rodriguez, Tim Hansen, Eugene Gershtein, and several
others.
And of course, thanks to the Pacific Pinball Museum for letting me put
it on and their help with the event.
