hey guys I am a newb to owning video games. I have a ranger mission. It's a 1 or 2 player shooter.

The 1st player (left side) gun makes the screen flash but no bullets shoot ever.

The 2nd player (right side) gun shoots fine always.

I got a brand new gun and swapped out the 1st player gun BUT I still have the same problem... screen flashes but no shooting. I then plugged the new gun into the 2nd player slot and it worked fine.

I took the original 1st player gun and put it in a carnival king and the gun worked fine.

This leads me to believe it is NOT the gun that's the problem on the ranger mission.

What do I check next?

thanks

you've narrowed it down to a board problem, for better or worse.
check for the pin where the "sense" line for Gun1 goes in (often the white wire)
and also the 5v line (red). The others clearly work (blk & blu - gnd & trigger)

1. clean off connector pin with a pencil eraser or magic stick
2. resolder header pins on board (cures a cracked joint)
3. if still failing, trace the circuit backward on the board and
verify components (could be a resistor that's gone "open").

We know the ground and trigger lines are ok (hence the white flashes),
but the sense line could be the trouble OR the 5v line (red), so with
the gun plugged in and disassembled, check to see if it's getting
proper 5v at the optical board. The gun's wiring is clearly OK,
but maybe it's not getting juice from the board. A quick fix,
if that's the case, would be to steal 5v from the other gun connector.
(and just bypass the broken 5v line).
