Randy Fromm 14 DVD set - Arcade School

Typical Randy.

If you ever see a set of his stuff for resale on eBay. He will post a set or two of his with a starting bid of $1. He NEVER posts his stuff unless there is a resale post.

He will see someone sell here and make a discount offer. Now he's just biting off his nose to spite his face.

Randy has some great technical expertise, but a complete lack of good business sense. He could regularly post "sales" here and get a pretty consistent stream of income with no ebay fees. Hell, he could post to eBay infrequently and get premium pricing likely too. Instead, he makes his products available in a reactionary manner.

I would say he is too close to his product. Get emotional about something and you tend to make the wrong decision. Clearly, this is happening here. Alienating a group that consists of nothing but people who are potential customers...not smart, not smart.

i kinda want to add my two cents in this discussion yet i don;t want to at the same time.....
here we go.

i don;t believe we will get a response from randy. this is judging by his lack of posting on the site here, which is kinda sad but understandable.

the way i look at it the man is literally a wealth of knowledge and having someone like that on the forum would be very helpful and encouraging the community here. BUT, also having the wealth of knowledge I could easily see him getting swapped with questions about everything.

as far as him no longer giving members a discount....he never advertised it on here. sure he posted it in a few topics that quickly were buried by the barrage of listing daily. so the only ones in the know are those who searched his name on the forums and found those threads. now knowing he offered such a discount i DEFINITLY would have jumped all over it. but seeing as i never knew and it seems alot of my fellow peers on here didn;t know either i am hard pressed to not complain about it. sure that price is a hell of a deal but when you don;t know a deal exist its hard to complain when you didn;t get in. this to is dissappointing. like a previous member said if we knew he would have easily sold dozens of packages to us members. which brings me to why i am posting.

recently i accuired a box filled to the brim with randy's stuff. i was actually unaware what i had till i broke it down. i had easily 100 sets of his stuff. litterally. so i was going to sell on the forums here and if you don;t believe me you could search my postings on the topic. anyways after finding out what i had i questioned why there were so many sets and such and low and behold...they were all bootlegs. yes it was ALL his content but the disks were all copies of his stuff.

this left me in a very uneasy position. i paid 200 dollars for the whole box and was told i could easily make my money back and way more. but i wasn;t told they were copies till after the sale. what happened was the person i bought from bought a set and local auctions would sell to fellow venders and hobbiest. at the end of the day after a moral argument with myself i not only got rid of the whole package but destroyed them, not even leaving a set for myself. this was a huge moral play in my mind but being a business owner i felt that i couldn;t do that to randy, a guy i have never had a conversation with.

now i read on various forums and research that randy really doesn't like to deal with hobbiest and only likes to work with venders and operators. once again i don't know the man so i don;t care to comment.

all i could say is one day i hope to own his whole set, but at the price he has everything at its something i would have to purchase when i am a little better off with my money situation. at his "klov" price i would have definitly jumped at it already.

but i should remind people that as of this posting he has listed quite a few of his videos on youtube. so i don;t know if he did so to spark interest in his product or just decided that at this point the arcade business isn't where it was. all i coudl say is randy if you do read this i think if you offered the set for 150 and posted it as a main topic on the forum you will be fullfilling quite alot of offers. heck, do it for just a 30 days period and see what happens. alot of people appreciate what you know. of course these are you videos and your time and labor to create make them so do what you like. i hope to own a full set one day.

Getting mad about reselling "real" copies of this is pretty asinine because, well, in this day and age, those are simple DVDrs (the "originals) and can be easily replicated...as of right now there is nothing to tell these apart from one someone could easily replicate but alienating the very crowd that supports this and would be interested in purchasing these is pretty bad....

I have a set of these myself that I purchased on this very forum and would love to get a couple of others (I am missing 2-3 of them) and I NEVER bootleg things so that's my whole view on this...

If you read this Randy. Would you consider putting on a seminar in Chicago in the future? I would think there would be a lot of seats filled.

What a Joke. Guy buys a legit set of disks. He does not copy them, and decides to sell them after he has got the info he needs for less than he paid. The original seller gets pissed and pulls a special Klov deal that no one even knew about, away from people that had nothing to do with anything.

What a NIMROD!!!

The sad part is as time marches on and more and more old school arcades
close, his customer base is going to eventually consist of just us.. the arcade
collecting community. The people he upsetting right now.

Really how many people could be going to his seminars?

Klov forums have a LONG memory. I've seen posts dredged up from the
previous version of KLOV. Randy has some great info on those dvds but he's
gotta get with the times instead of these type of posts.

If I was him? Drop the price to $129 and market to the community on here
and byoac. Show up at CAX, NWPB show, post in the forums, become a
celebrity.. build a following.. DVDs will start flying off the shelves. Piracy
will be minimal because the community will back Randy due to his good nature
and squash pirate efforts. I've seen that effect in other online communities.

That will lead to more seminars, etc.. There are still plenty of newbies in this
hobby coming in every day.

That makes too much sense. It sounds like he's ignoring a potential huge (relatively) customer base here.

I am the one who bought these discs and when they arrived I was super stoked to watch all of them. Malice95 did an awesome job shipping them to me and they arrived in like new condition, Thanks Malice95! I went to pop one in and immediately realized I was going to be watching low quality VHS-C footage that was dubbed onto a DVD. This was a major let down.

Randy, I learned alot and I appreciate you taking the time to make them. However, the quality is piss poor. If you are gonna try to get $300 for a set of DVD's in 2011 I suggest you step your game up. Now I am selling them because I have no use for them. Sorry, but it's the truth.

I didn't know about the KLOV speacial. :( Definitely would have bought a set. Why didn't Randy work with the site and have a sticky thread or even an ad with a link to his website?

It's like i referenced. when i read some research on him he doesn;t liek to deal with hobbiest. and obviously the man is respected because his stuff still hasn;t hit the torrent sites.

Well, this listing puts an end to my special kLOV offer.
My kLOV offer to sell at 150 is ended now.
Randy fromm

not alot of people knew about your "special offer" randy, and explain to me why someone cannot legitimately resell your product at a discount once they are done using it?

Using your logic here, when people buy books, once they are done reading they are supposed to throw them away??? really???

Me no understand. Its like spaeth all over again. Sad. You could do alot of business here if you would just take a step back, breathe, and pull your head out of your a$$.

Keep in mind 99% of us are not ops, we are not "in the industry" for profit. We collect these games, preserve them. We have alot of money tied up in machines that we will never get back. THats ok, its part of the deal. We dont have the big arcade industry money to blow on this stuff, but its great information and im glad you do what you do randy. I guess what im saying is that its a little different program here, treat us well, you get a ton of business. Act like a 3 year old, well, good luck with your sales.

Randy Hates when people re-sell his stuff - I used to see him say shit on RGVAC. Who cares, he's pretty much a douche, and if he doesn't want to share his knowledge at an affordable price he can blow the arcade collective who enjoys working on this stuff and who could stand to learn a lot from the guy.

Just for the record RANDY - I hope to buy your videos someday, but not from you.

No, it hasn't hit the torrent sites yet because A) It would take a decade to seed all of it. B) It's not THAT popular and C) Randy would sue somebody.

If he is pulling the pin on the Klov offer because someone has decided to sell a second hand original copy of his product, for less than his special offer well, that is just ridiculous.

Even more absurd is if he is pulling the pin on the special offer because of the joke post about copying his product. If piracy is his concern then doubling the price is a sure fire way to stamp it out

And he has rocks in his head if he thinks his product has never been copied and given away, or sold behind the scenes.

I had never heard of these dvd's myself and am thinking about buying some jamma pcb's for my cab and starting a small game PCB collection. I WAS thinking cool, these dvd's would come in handy but with that attitude I will just find other repair information online.

Randy wouldn't even sell me a set when I inquired in February.

If you read this Randy. Would you consider putting on a seminar in Chicago in the future? I would think there would be a lot of seats filled.

I had a similar idea but my discussions with Randy ended before they started. (Same conversation as I reference below).

I asked him "Re: arcade classes. How many of your recent attendees are collectors vs. in the amusement business. I'm curious about gauging the viability of hosting one of your classes in conjunction with a collector/enthusiast event..."

He responded, "100% amusement business."

I didn't know about the KLOV speacial. :( Definitely would have bought a set. Why didn't Randy work with the site and have a sticky thread or even an ad with a link to his website?

On February 26, 2011, I contacted Randy and asked him if he would donate a set to the Library here. I even offered to write a review on this site about his offerings. At the exact same time I offered to buy a set if he wasn't interested in donating a set. He declined on all fronts with "I'd really rather not do either of these things."

I wrote back "Thank you again for the email. So you are interested in neither option: providing a review copy ( not surprised) or selling us a copy (surprised). No response requested unless I misunderstood."

Randy wrote back "Honestly, I try to stay as far apart from the collector community as I possibly can. I simply have no interest at all. Thank you Randy".

I was really shocked at the time and left it at that.

Now looking back at my emails again, he might have thought that we were going to loan via mail these DVDs out to people that would copy them, even though I wrote they were for on-site only. Our library is really more of an academic and research library. People can come on-site but we don't loan by mail to the general public.

I think I'll write him again to make sure there wasn't a misunderstanding, though I sort of doubt there was.

It's like i referenced. when i read some research on him he doesn;t liek to deal with hobbiest.

Apparently.

not alot of people knew about your "special offer" randy....

It was posted over a year ago and it wasn't in my mind when I emailed him. I was actually 5 minutes away from his place so if he had said, "Great, here's a copy" I would have offered to meet him in person. Especially since I had an idea on how he could generated extra business and help this community with a special event geared towards this community.

... I WAS thinking cool, these dvd's would come in handy but with that attitude I will just find other repair information online.

Since he wouldn't even sell me a copy it got me thinking back in February. All the information anyone would ever need to fix these machines is online, but it's scattered all over the place. It got me searching for YouTube videos by other people on repair topics and on key threads posted here over the years, and got me planning a new tech addition for this site which is still in development (the addition wouldn't compete, nor try to, with his videos).

What started out as a FS thread almost seems like it should be moved to the general section. I normally would post in a FS thread but the item was already sold back on page 1, and contextually it seemed appropriate.
