Random: Yars Revenge

Hi guys

My name is Yan and i have already built a yars revenge arcade machine, I wanted to make a machine that i felt looked something like what it may of done in 1981, it also doesn't run the 2600 version but a full colour vector version of the game created by a British programmer, i felt this would then replicate a complete machine had it of exhisted.

A youtube video can be found here, sorry about the quality but i had many issues with my software.

That's very cool. You should release the game software as freeware if you're so inclined. You could submit it to indiegames.com and freeindiegam.es to get more exposure.

Rich (This Old Game) and I spent a long time getting it to look right. Was well worth the time it took to get it the way I wanted. Made its first appearance at the Portland Retro Gaming show last September. Now it sits in a Bar-cade. That other one is damn nice looking Good job sir.

Damn, that's sweet. Tell me about the insides?

The other one pictured is nice too, hats off to you guys!

yars revenge was my favorite game on the 2600 as well. It would of been cool to see it in the arcades as a vector game in maybe the gravitar, space duel, etc. style cab

nice to see the get alittle more attention.
cool vectors on that other one.

the art on chargers I did was a mix of various Atari layouts
to help give it a more vintage real Atari look
the cabinet was a dig dug or kanagroo-IIRC
the sideart with "Atari" was basically taken from the Pole Position layout.
the bezel was from centipede and the cpo dig dug.

the system runs YR thorugh a 2600 and to a Go7 through a DragonsLair converter.

I _REALLY_ like the art on Chargers YR machine. Before I knew what it was, I was emailing Scott and feverishly asking him about it :D

.....through a DragonsLair converter.

can someone point me in the direction of this device? Not finding anything myself so far....

thx

edit:
oh I see it in the schemtatic now; the device with IC 101 (TDA 3570). Was this a separate PCB?

Hey guys,

FWIW I sent the pics of Charger's Yars Revenge to Howard (the guy that wrote the game). We used to work together way back when and he had this neat little tidbit of info....

Howard Scott Warshaw: That is really cool! Way back when, Dave Theurer (Missile Command, Tempest, etc.) was actually talking about doing a coin-op version of Yars. It's nice to know it finally made it. Thanks, Tom!

Just figured you'd all get a kick out of the fact that some of the old Atari engineers were considering doing an arcade version. Kudos to Charger and Rich for the hard work that must have gone into making it look that damn good!

That's really cool! Dave Theurer was more focused on his own projects I think, he didn't even do Missile Command 2 himself! It's too bad Howard didn't move over to coin-op, he's a great game designer. What did you work on when you were at Atari? By the way, I listened to a podcast he was on and he said he has a game idea he has wanted to make for a long time... you should prod him a bit to make it happen! He could put it on iOS, Android, PC, etc, I know I'd buy it. I'm a big fan of Once Upon Atari as well.

I worked with Howard, Ed Rotberg, RJ Mical and a bunch of other Atari/Williams/Amiga alums when I was at 3DO in the mid to late 90's. It was an awesome place to work where you regularly turned around and said, "Holy crap, is that who I think it is?"

I'm not quite old enough to have worked at Atari back in the day, but it was an amazing experience getting to work with many of the people who created the games I grew up playing.

Oh, that's cool too! I had a 3DO a while back. Trip had a good vision with it but leaving the hardware manufacturers to set the price killed it. Needed to be a loss leader and start at $299-399. I guess it also lost all marketing support because once they made their IPO, the investors all made out like bandits and bailed. It's really too bad. And then Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse looked awesome later in 3DO's life, I wish that one saw the light of day! Got any insider info on that?

yeah thanks man, I love the other one too its very nice, I noted the Centipede bezel, My trouble is i live in an apartment so i have no place to make arcades, The company i work for lets me use their shop at weekends when they are closed so my Yars arcade went from buying the wood to paint/graphics, Wiring and switching it on in two days flat, its also only the third machine i have ever built so all in all im really pleased with it.

I also totally custom make the Bezels

Yars update

Here is an update picture of my yars revenge cabinet, I recently got chatting to Richie Knucklez online about each others cabinets and he liked my sideart and i liked his marquee so we swapped in a cross global machine unification :)

It looks really nice now
