What the fuck was the point of Pitfall! anyway? I played it for hours on the 2600 and felt like I became part of that world. An Indiana Jones-like world of 4 foot tall cobras and watering holes with a 3 croc limit. A world where if you weren't running, you were swinging. A world where underground caves felt like finished basements. Great game when you first discovered it, but I think Activision had the last laugh. Amazing how ingrained in my brain the memories of this game are.

It's funny you should mention Pitfall. I just bought a 2600 on Ebay purely so I can play Pitfall. It is, and always will be, my favorite 2600 game. I played that game like mad. Was there an end?? I did get that cool patch too. I remember my Dad taking the photo. I love Pitfall.

I played the hell out of that game, too. It was a BIG deal when it came out. I am still not sure what the purpose was. We have all heard of a 'heat sink'. PF was a 'time sink'. Maybe that was the purpose - keep the kids occupied. Activision was secretly working for our parents to keep us from bothering them....

I freakin' love Pitfall. I loved how if you got hit by a log you would genuflect and a horrible low pitch error noise would ensue. Great game.

Pitfall 2 the arcade game is pretty sweet too. The guy jumps like a fairy, but that might be right up your alley.

Thank you for sharing that fond memory, Phetishboy.

You are getting on my last nerve*.

*'last nerve' is the NeoCeltic term for 'lap'.

Wait... was there an end?!!! I would play that for hours and don't remember and ending...

I have the Stella emulator on my laptop and every once in a while on a long flight, I'll bring it up and play some Pitfall and Yar's Revenge (both very easy to play using a keyboard). Every single time, someone sitting near me will say, "WOW- is that Pitfall? I loved that game."

You don't remember the end??

According to the map of rooms someone posted you only play for 20min then the game stops. I do recall their being an end although not a particular screen so this is likely right. Also remember atari having some promotion where you take a pic of the final screen and send it in and you get a t shirt or something.

You get a patch!! Not a t-shirt.

I really would like to know where my patch is. :(

I played Pitfall all the time on Intellivision. It was my favorite game by a long shot. I didn't know there was an end. Man, now I want to play it.

The Trazanesque sound of swinging over the watering holes was one of the best video game sounds ever. All bassy and muffled and shit. Awesome.
